Spain-England Friendly, Other Matches In Spanish Territory Considered "High Risk"

Posted by Juan Arango

The ugly shadow of racism and xenophobia are creeping in quickly as the international friendly between Spain and England looms larger. The Commission Against Violence, Racism, Xenophobia, and Hate in Sport has classified this match to be held in Sevilla as a "high risk" match.

Memories of the 2004 friendly at the Santiago Bernabeu still smarts as racist chants rained down from the home of Real Madrid towards the black English players. This action drew the ire of the international footballing community as well as FIFA. The Spaniards will also play this match with a tight leash on them. If any racist or xenophobic incidents were to occur in this match, the Spaniards would face possible suspension.

Acts of racism are still fresh in the minds of English sports fans after Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton endured the harassment of some fans in Barcelona while during a race in Catalunya

English organization Kick It Out has asked for this type of action in the event these incidents would occur.

In lieu of the events that occurred in the Atlético-Marseille matchup, UEFA has also classified the Atlético-Porto and Real Madrid-Liverpool matches as high-risk. Domestically, the upcoming Barcelona-Espanyol match on week 24 and the Sevilla-Atlético match have been given the dubious distinction. The Catalan derby was marked by incidents started by the infamous Blaugrana ultras- the Boixos Nois- began throwing flares from the top tier of the Olimpic Montjuic and into a section where innocent Espanyol fans found their way onto the pitch to avoid the mob of people there.

France Squad Named For Argentina Friendly

Posted by Anonymous

French coach Raymond Domenech named his squad for the February 11th friendly versus Argentina in Marseille. The big news is the surprise call up of Toulouse keeper, Cédric Carrasso. He has been a part of Toulouse's surprise 6th place standing and is the key component of a defense that is the 2nd stingiest in France's Ligue 1. Carrasso will be the 3rd keeper.

Les Bleus have been hit hard with injuries as Manchester United's Patrice Evra, Inter's Patrick Vieira, Lyon's Sidney Govou, and Arsenal's Mickael Silvestre are all out for the match. Also missing from the squad are the top 2 scorers in Ligue 1. Toulouse's André-Pierre Gignac & PSG's Guillaume Hoarau. Both of them have 13 goals on the season and were overlooked in favor of Rennes' Jimmy Briand & Milan loaner Yoann Gourcuff of Bordeaux. Here is the complete squad:

Goalkeepers: Steve Mandanda (Marseille), Hugo Lloris (Lyon), Cédric Carrasso (Toulouse)

Defenders: Eric Abidal (FC Barcelona/ESP), Gaël Clichy (Arsenal/ENG), Julien Escudé (FC Sévilla/ESP), Rod Fanni (Rennes), William Gallas (Arsenal/ENG), Philippe Mexès (AS Roma/ITA), Bacary Sagna (Arsenal/ENG), Sébastien Squillaci (FC Sévilla/ESP).

Del Bosque Makes Spanish Callup

Posted by Juan Arango

Vicente del Bosque has named his squad for the February 11th friendly versus England in Sevilla. Barcelona players Gerard Piqué & Sergi Busquets got their 1st ever call up for La Furia. Piqué was called up to provide cover in case Valencia's Raúl Albiol & Barca's Carles Puyol are not fit.

Busquets replaces injured Arsenal midfielder, Cesc Fàbregas. The duo's inclusion makes 5 players from the Blaugrana on the team. That is the most along with Liverpool's 5 representatives. Athletic Bilbao striker Fernando Llorente was a bit of a surprise especially when there is Álvaro Negredo Sánchez of Almeria having a breakout season.

Here is the complete list of players for the February 11th match:

Goalkeepers: Iker Casillas (Real Madrid) y José Manuel Reina (Liverpool/ING)

Defenders: Raúl Albiol & Carlos Marchena (Valencia), Álvaro Arbeloa (Liverpool/ENG), Joan Capdevila (Villarreal), Juan Gutiérrez "Juanito" (Real Betis), Gerard Piqué & Carles Puyol (FC Barcelona), Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid).

Midfielders: Xabi Alonso & Albert Riera (Liverpool/ENG), Sergi Busquets, Xavi Hernández, & Andrés Iniesta (Barcelona), Santiago Cazorla & Marcos Senna (Villarreal), David Silva (Valencia).

Forwards: Daniel Güiza (Fenerbahce/TUR), Fernando Llorente (Athletic), Fernando Torres (Liverpool/ENG), David Villa (Valencia).

The 5-time World Champion (and official national team of the Metellus Family) Brazil announced their roster for the highly anticipated Feb. 10th friendly vs. 4-time and current World Champion, Italy. Its a roster that was surprising due to its omissions and additions.

The most glaring omission is the red-hot Juventus striker, Amauri who has carried Juve all season after his move from Palermo.
The image “http://d.yimg.com/eur.yimg.com/ng/sp/empics/20080803/23/2552603327-soccer-the-emirates-cup-hamburg-v-juventus-emirates-stadium.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.
His omission from the squad could push him to play for Italy. The Brazilian born goal poacher has Italian citizenship and Marcelo Lippi could use a hungry striker to spice up the Azzurri attack. It looks like Dunga chose Adriano of Inter Milan instead of Amauri.

Another surprise was the addition of Fiorentina midfielder, Felipe Melo.

The central midfielder got his 1st call up and looks to be the successor to players like Emerson and Gilberto Silva. Dunga regular, Diego will not appear for the Seleção and it appears that Ronaldinho's inclusion came at the expense of Diego.

No surprise however that Dunga pilaged the Italian Serie A for this friendly against Italy. 11 of the 22 players called to the team draw checks from Serie A teams with AC Milan having 4, Inter & Roma with 3 each and Felipe Melo representing Fiorentina. Here is the complete list of players for the February 10th friendly vs. Italy.

Goalkeepers: Julio Cesar (Inter Milan), Doni (AS Roma)

Defenders: Maicon (Inter Milan), Daniel Alves (FC Barcelona), Adriano Correa (Sevilla), Marcelo (Real Madrid), Lucio (Bayern Munich), Luisao (Benfica), Juan (AS Roma), Thiago Silva (AC Milan)

Midfielders: Elano (Manchester City), Gilberto Silva (Panathinaikos), Josue (Wolfsburg), Anderson (Manchester United), Felipe Melo (Fiorentina), Julio Baptista (AS Roma), Kaka (AC Milan), Ronaldinho (AC Milan)

Forwards: Luis Fabiano (Sevilla), Alexandre Pato (AC Milan), Robinho (Manchester City), Adriano (Inter Milan)

According to the official website of the Italian National Team, figc.it, Marcello Lippi will announce his roster on February 7th. The match will be played in London at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium.
