2008-09 MAF La Liga Best XI

Posted by Anonymous

In honor of Barcelona's historic season the 2008-09 Mad About Fútbol La Liga Best XI will take the formation of a 4-3-3. As you might expect the side will have a distinct Blaugrana feel to it.

Goalkeeper:
Iker Casillas (Real Madrid)
http://muymerengue.com/files/2009/01/f3c3555113240cfi3.jpg
The Real Madrid stopper is the best goalkeeper in the world and was one of the few bright spots in Los Merengues' trophy-less 08-09 campaign.

Defense:
Dani Alves (Barcelona)
http://i.media.goal.com/g/33122_news.jpg
The Brazilian right back might have been Barcelona's best acquisition for the 08-09 season as his speed and ball handling helped Barça on both offense & defense.

Carles Puyol (Barcelona)

The Catalan captain is the best leader in football. His versatility along the backline and leadership was essential for Barça's historic treble run when injuries & suspension threatened to jeopardize history.

Sébastien Squillaci (Sevilla)
http://i.media.goal.com/g/43345_news.jpg
The French international center back was the pillar for Sevilla's 2nd best defense. The ex-Lyon defender led Sevilla in La Liga appearances and is a regular for Les Bleus.

Filipe Kasmirski (Deportivo La Coruña)
http://www.pilka.pl/photo/players/th1605127.jpg
Deportivo's young left back was the breakout star of the La Liga season. The Brazilian started every La Liga game for Deportivo and was a massive part of Depor's surprising run to 7th place. He is on the radar of every big European club and should be a member of the Brazilian national team very soon.

Midfield:
Andres Iniesta (Barcelona)
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/telegraph/multimedia/archive/01400/andres_iniesta_1400386c.jpg
The Spanish midfielder is Barça's most valuable offensive player. That's saying a lot considering the attacking talent Barcelona has. Without Iniesta: Barcelona struggled to beat Real 2-0 at Camp Nou, with Iniesta: Barcelona dominates Real 6-2 at the Bernabeu. Messi is going to win the FIFA POY but Iniesta can't be ignored.

David Silva (Valencia)

http://i.media.goal.com/g/22938_news.jpg
Los Che's best midfielder was an important piece of Valencia's late season run to 6th place and a Europa League spot. If Silva hadn't missed the 1st 3 months of the season Los Che could have finished in the Top 3.

Xavi (Barcelona)
http://i.media.goal.com/g/27750_news.jpg
Xavi is one of the Top 5 players in the world and is a player with no perceived weaknesses. He & Puyol are the pillars of Catalan athletic pride and in every big game or tournament he wins the man of the match or player of the tournament.

Forwards:
Lionel Messi (Barcelona)
http://d.yimg.com/i/ng/sp/empics/20090408/20/816466511-soccer-uefa-champions-league-quarter-final-first-leg-barcelona-v.jpg
La Pulga was Barcelona's leading goal scorer in all competitions in 08-09 and his goal in the Champions League final cemented his title as World Best Player. Messi is going to be the 2009 FIFA Player Of The Year.

Samuel Eto'o (Barcelona)
http://i2.cdn.turner.com/si/2008/writers/world_soccer/09/22/spain.etoo/p1-etoo-0922.jpg
The fiery Cameroon striker is the best pure goalscorer on the planet and finished 2nd in the race for the Pichichi. Eto'o is also the most reliable big game goal scorer having scored goals in Barcelona's two most recent Champions League finals.

Diego Forlan (Atlético Madrid)
http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/07N27CgdRj86G/340x.jpg
The 2nd generation Uruguayan footballer won the Pichichi award as La Liga's leading goal scorer with 32 goals. The Atlético Madrid striker was volcanic hot as he scored 12 goals in the last 8 games of the season to lead Los Colchoneros to 4th place and a Champions League spot.

DT:
Josep Guardiola
http://images.football.co.uk/Dynamic/News/400x400/JosepGuardiolaNew3.jpg
This one is obvious, the former Barcelona player handled a supremely talented team perfectly. Guardiola was at the helm of the greatest season in La Liga history and his demeanor was exactly what Blaugrana needed to win their historic treble.

Bench:
GK: Victor Valdes (Barcelona)
DEF: Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid), Carlos Marchena (Valencia)
MID: Juan Mata (Valencia), Duda (Malaga)
ATT: David Villa (Valencia), Álvaro Negredo (Almeria)

There it is the 2008-09 Mad About Fútbol La Liga Best XI. Let us know what you think.

Attacking Midfielders:

Kaká (AC Milan)
http://img.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2007/04_03/kakaDM_468x351.jpg

The Case Of PK Shootout

Posted by Anonymous

What comes to your mind when "PK Shootout" is uttered? Some love the drama associated with spot kicks deciding a match and some hate the "lottery" of spot kicks. Roberto Baggio was hating them after his infamous PK miss gifted Brazil its 4th World Cup Trophy in The 1994 final. Next to the offsides rule, the PK Shootout is the most controversial aspect of on-pitch football.

An article written by Buck Cargal on Foxsoccer.com posed an interesting alternative to the PK Shootout. He proposed a corner kick showdown and while i'm not in favor of that, it was a creative idea when most people just complain without having a solution. Well I have a solution that's already been used: The Golden Goal, with some aids.

First of all, the Golden Goal is a great idea (ask David Trezeguet), Golden Goal sudden death intensifies the drama and makes every shot off the post or crossbar or shot that was just wide more agonizing. The key to avoiding PK Shootouts is to stop the match from getting to that point. The Golden Goal with some modifications during the match would work.

Firstly, allow 3 or 4 more substitutions for the extra time period. Currently if a team has used its 3 subs before the 90 minutes they cannot sub any more. The fatigue forces teams to play the next 30 minutes overly defensive, in essence playing for PKs. Giving each team 3 or 4 more subs for extra time would put fresh legs on the pitch and provide more goal scoring opportunities. A smart manager could put as many as 6 or 7 players (adding the 3 subs from regulation) on the pitch. This would test the team's depth and the manager's knowledge of his players.

Secondly, modify the offsides rule. Its a tricky rule as it is but what can be done is only call offsides if the attacker is completely behind the last defender. Much like the way the ball has to completely cross the endline for a goal or the sideline for the ball to be out. Another part of the offsides rule that's gets thrown out in extra time is calling offsides on a deflection from the defense.

After all of that if the score is tied than the luck or fate or whatever people want to call it of PKs should be the decider. Contrary to soccer purist thinking PKs is not a lottery. You don't practice picking the lottery numbers at your house before going to the store. Is their some luck involved in winning in PKs? Yes, but its not entirely up to luck. It still takes skill and practice to take a well-paced, well-placed, indefensible penalty kick.

Detractors to the Golden Goal say that teams would play extra defensive to avoid the goal but let's be real, the vast majority of coaches manage their teams that way regardless. Most modern managers are scared and work to avoid losses rather than going for the win. To borrow an American football term, they play "prevent defense." All that does is prevent victories, maybe these new ideas might open up the game more.

The Golden Goal along with extra subs for extra time and a modification of the offsides rule in extra time would hopefully keep matches from going to a PKs. If after all that the match is still tied than keep your defibrillators close cause there nothing more dramatic in sports than a PK shootout in a Cup match.
