Argentine League: Transfer Market

Posted by Lucas Lugo

The Argentine football league will officially begin on August 8th, with three new teams competing in the first division (All Boys, Olimpo and Quilmes). Everyone has been busy in the market, but two clubs that have really gone all out are Boca Juniors and River Plate. It’s not uncommon to see this, considering both teams are going under really tough times.
Boca Juniors rebuilt their whole back line, starting with the goalkeeper Christian Luchetti, and defenders Insaurralde, Caruso and Cellay. River did the same thing, bringing back Juan Pablo Carrizo, and signing central defender Jonathan Maidana (former Boca Juniors) and Arano.
The team that has suffered the most from the transfer market is Velez Sarsfield, who lost a lost of players to other clubs, something to consider when they have to face two tournaments, Sudamericana and Apertura.

Racing bury Boca title hopes

Posted by Juan Arango

Gabriel Hauche embraces Pablo Lugüercio
after scoring against Boca (Sport Soccer)

Boca were ready to embark on a tough stretch of matches if they planned to recover from a poor run of form. Unfortunately for the Xeneizes, their first step was probably their last in their run towards a league title as rivals Racing Club defeated for the first time in eight years at La Bombonera 2-1.

The win by Racing Club, led by former Boca Juniors coach Miguel Ángel Russo, put La Academia out of the promotion zone. Brian Lluy and Gabriel Hauche scored for the Avellaneda side while Walter Gaitán opened the scoring for the home side in the 14th minute who remain stuck on seven points after eight matches.

Racing would equalize two minutes afterwards courtesy of former Gimnasia man Brian Lluy on a breakaway. Then former Argentinos Juniors forward Gabriel Hauche would score the eventual game-winner in the dying moments of the first half.

Despite being behind, Boca sputtered offensively but were capable of generating enough offense to force Jorge De Olivera in becoming the savior for Racing in the second half.

Boca's defensive woes continued to become evident as Racing were able to take advantage of several Xeneize flaws. There is one thing that has become evident and that is that the new generation of Boca youngsters coming out of their once vaunted youth system are no longer what they once were.

Gabriel Palletta has been a flop ever since he came back from Liverpool and has had his moments of brilliance, but his return to Argentina has been marred with inconsistency; but let's not blame him entirely. He was moved from one side of the defensive backline to the other depending on need and on coaching whims of the different bosses that were in charge in La Boca the past three years.

The Santiago Villafañe experiment has unofficially come to an end as he has not responded to the situations that Abel Alves has placed him in and there are no answers at all. On Saturday he was responsible for the first goal as he pushed up and allowed Lluy to run right by him. Luiz Alberto has also offered little in terms of security in the back line and also add that Boca have a young keeper under the sticks in Javi García.

The learning curve does not have the angle that a club like Boca requires its youngsters to have and this season has become one of transition in a matter of seven weeks.

Meanwhile on offense, Federico Insúa looks to have had his best days long behind him. His return to Boca from Necaxa (courtesy of the other Televisa team, Club América). He played one of his worst matches of the season.

To add fuel to the fire, Boca star Juan Román Riquelme harshly criticized the club brass and defended coach Abel Alves. "What happened this past summer was not normal. (Alves) is doing the impossible to find a team he was given four days before the season and it is becoming more difficult to find it with every passing game." said Riquelme.

"It's the reality and Boca fans should know. We have no chance to win the title, but we are going to try to win as many points as possible for the rest of the season.

"For Boca the road does not get tougher as they will have to head to the Delta to play Tigre and then River Plate comes to La Bombonera two weeks later.

Racing in the meantime were able to stave off the promotion shadow for another week and the team led by Miguel Ángel Russo are slowly showing their form winning two of the first four matches under his direction.

Clausura 2010 - Week 3

Argentine League - Week 3 Recap

Racing, with the return of Roberto Ayala to the Argentine league fell 4-2 to Arsenal de Sarandi. Racing came into this game with a highly offensive formation, leaving only 3 players in the back; Ayala in his return played as the Center Defender. Everything looked like a celebration, but the party soon became a nightmare. Early in the game, defender Matias Cahais put Racing up one goal, when he headed the ball into the back of the net from an incoming cross. The goal should have been invalidated due to an offside position. But Arsenal began to find holes, in a defense that offered no guarantees. Jara, the young forward who was recently called for the National team and who will continue his career next season in Portugal with local side Benfica (Javier Saviola, Pablo Aimar and Angel DiMaria), tied the scoreboard after beating Ayala in speed and finishing to the far post. Racing was able to go up into the scoreboard one more time, but it was pointless. Arsenal tied the game thanks to a shot from Diego Galvan. The game finished 4-2 for Arsenal, and Racing showed that they have problems in their back line. To add to the mix, Racing defender Lucas Licht had to be substituted after he received a deep cut across the right knee, he is expected to miss out on the National Team call and will probably miss a few games.

San Lorenzo visited Estudiantes de La Plata. Estudiantes came into the game in need of 3 points after losing the derby to Gimnasia de La Plata. Once again Sebastian “La Brujita” Veron showed the world why he was chosen as the best player of the continent. He organized his team; he was vocal and scored the second goal. This week Estudiantes will make their debut in the Libertadores, they have the hard task to defend their crown.

Boca Juniors traveled to Rosario to visit Newell’s Old Boys. A minute of silence was offered before the beginning of the game in memory of the 14 year old who was killed this week during an encounter between rival bands of Newell’s. Boca’s victory of 3-1 over Lanus was just a mirage, once again Boca lost, their defense allowed everything through and when they seemed to be picking up the game, Abbondanzieri allowed a goal from 20 yards outside the box, which could have been easily handled by another goalkeeper. In less than 15 minutes, Newell’s was up 3 goals. Boca has two main problems:

1. It has not found a consolidated defense; they are giving too much space, every set play becomes a goal opportunity (almost 90% of the balls that come into the box from a set play have finished in a goal)

2. Boca has two great finishers, Palermo and the youngster Lucas Viatri, but what can a center forward do when the ball does not make it to the box. Boca does not play through the wings, therefore they don’t create opportunities.

Head Coach Avel Albes has no responsibility in this loss. His team does not respond, the defense offers no guarantees and we can say luck is not in their side.

Chacarita Juniors defeated Banfield 2 goals to 1, and with this result there are out of the relegation spots. Chacarita displayed some very good Futbol, and once again they were deadly in the set plays. Chacarita’s head coach Fernando Gamboa was very happy about the result and said “why not dream about the championship”.

River Plate tied goal less to Rosario Central, in a match that started very promising but soon developed into a boring one. River Plate showed a lot of security in the back, this was a good sign of recovery. The young squad attempted in every way to break the game, but the lack of offensive options didn’t help. Villalba and Funes Mori, both 18 years old, displayed an acceptable level but could not find the net. Marcelo Gallardo made his debut this year and Matias Almeyda once again showed the fans why he was chosen Captain.

The worst news this weekend was the fact that once again, Ariel Ortega fell into his addiction of alcohol driven by a state of depression. It is no longer an issue of Futbol, it is his life that is at stake. As a fan of River I wish for his prompt recovery, he is an essential piece of the team and we want him to be happy, wearing the number 10 and having the crowd chant “Ole” “Ole”. We hope for his safe recovery and his return to the fields soon.

Racing Club present their new Olympikus kits

Posted by Juan Arango

Racing Club change outfitters yet once again, but this time it was a good thing.

Their move from Nike to Penalty was short-lived as the jerseys did not pan out as well as originally thought.

Once again, the Argentine clubs know how to present jerseys, mixing hot women with the actual clothing.

The Brazilian outfitters used the same template with reigning Carioca champs Flamengo as well as with Copa Libertadores-bound Lanús.
