An Ode to a Real Madrid great

Posted by Juan Arango

Apr 06, 2010 - Madrid, Spain - RAUL GONZALEZ BLANCO. Real Madrid stars leaving lunch at Asador Donostiarra Restaurant In Madrid.
Legendary Real Madrid player Raúl (Zumapress)

There were players in football history that marked an era we never realize when they do it, but when you realize it, they are ready to reach the football stratosphere. Let's go to October 29, 1994 and then-coach Jorge Valdano decides to call a lanky 17-year old kid to the first team. Who would have ever imagined that a young striker that came over from the broken Atlético Madrid youth system would make such an incredible splash at Valdebebas and mark an era of Spanish football. Maybe there is little use for my wordiness, but Raúl's bio on the Real Madrid website says everything I have to say...

“Symbol of Madridismo. One of the best European players of all time.”

Former Atlético Madrid president Jesús Gil y Gil always referred to Raúl as his “bete noire". He was the boogeyman that haunted his old team. Time and time again he rubbed in Colchonero faces the fact that they let him go. His first-ever Madrid derby he taught Gil y Gil a lesson he would have taught again and again. Raúl scored his first-ever goal as a professional as Valdano took an even bigger gamble when he replaced Emilio Butragueño with his young protegé. Raúl also start his first ever match against Atlético and would use Butragueño's number 7 in the process.

He also gave fits to Madrid's eternal rivals- Barcelona. He is second all-time only behind Alfredo Di Stefano with 15 goals in all competitions. Even in the twilight of his Madrid career he was able to give the Blaugrana a scare of two, as was the case in his last appearance at the Nou Camp when he missed a header on goal after coming off the bench for Cristiano Ronaldo.

Sixteen years later, the circle becomes full and Raúl will receive one of the biggest ovations in his career as he says farewell to the team that saw him evolve from “Babystar” to “Pichichi” to “El Gran Capitán”.

He was not only the biggest star on the team but he was also an oasis of stability in a sea of absolute mayhem. He supplanted the ever-fading “Quinta del Buitre” and survived the first edition of the Galácticos and Florentino Pérez. Despite changes surrounding the club at all levels, Raúl was still there producing and contending for titles individually and with club and country.

No one thought that when a 17-year-old kid that was coming from Madrid's C team would become the symbol of a club that would have the same footing that players like Di Stefano, Puskas, Gento, Santillana, Butragueño, Sánchez, Sanchis, Juanito, and many more had during their respective careers with the Merengues. In the end, one of the biggest gambles of Jorge Valdano's coaching career ended up being the biggest gift to Madridismo.

But 729 matches and 324 goals later, Raúl marked an era in Spanish football. His goals came in all shapes colors and skill levels. From pouncing on rebounds to heel flicks to cross-country jaunts past defenders, Raúl captivated friend and foe alike.

"When he plays, in his mind there is only the goal; it's the football essence. Figo and himself are two great players although a bit overated; everytime they do something, you stand up over your seat".- Thierry Henry

He was not one of those vocal leaders that challenged players on the field and behind the microphones. He was the type of player that instead gave a team that was always in the middle of a media storm some type of normalcy. Raúl was not the type of player that people saw on the front page of the tabloid rags looking for cameras and posing for the televisions in order to be seen in the perfect angle.

He cared to be perfectly angled when he found himself in front of goal and ready to spell impending doom on rival goalkeepers. That was the profile that he looked for. Raúl González Blanco marked His sense of timing and finishing was lethal. He was the nightmare of defenders throughout a 16-year career.

He also cared about his teammates and for the good of the team. That is why it was more of note to see the Madrid great perform when there was so much adversity.

When you talk to his former teammates they all coincide with one thing- he is a true leader and a true person. Fernando Hierro, much like David Beckham, attribute their success with Los Blancos to Raúl's strength and desire to have sanity in the dressing room as a first step towards success. “He is also one of the few guy's that if i ever have a problem i would go to him rather than my own mother,” said Hierro in an interview back in 2007.

Beckham attributed the success of the team that won the title back in 2007 to Raúl as well. In his farewell press conference, Beckham said that Real Madrid won because Raúl was “...a tower of strength for many people and for the team, and he’s been a person that a lot of people should look up to because he is very dedicated to what he does and what he believes in.”

This is a salute to a man that was respected off the field and was feared on it. A few years ago I wrote an article on the legendary Madrid striker as he was struggling to find his way back to his glory days. He suffered a significant cut in playing time as well as a serious knee injury in the process.  But lots changed in the process as your saw how that situation unfolded.

"He is a winner. He is inheritance of the Real Madrid"-Fabio Capello

But that was what told me more about Raúl than anything else. What tells you more about him was not his his trophies and goals throughout his career. What was most remarkable about the former Madrid man was his ability to rise from the ashes and be able to be a fundamental part of Real Madrid's two titles back in 2006-07 and 2007-08. DUring this resurgence, Raúl scored 47 goals in 91 matches. It was amazing to see the legendary Pichichi start to scored at such an impressive clip.

Time after time Raúl was part of important goals throughout the season that saw the team fighting against two-time defending champs Barcelona and were able to slight them out in the final match of the season based on the head-to-head tiebreaker.

"I hope he doesn't like travelling, Failing that we will stop him entering the country. Real buy these big players like Figo, Zidane and Ronaldo but I think the best player in the world is Raúl"- Sir Alex Ferguson

This is not a eulogy regarding the end of Raúl career. This is a tribute to a player that needs to be given tribute as he did a great deal for Real Madrid. Once again I am not looking at his departure to Schalke as a his career's final resting place. I am looking at it as a place where he can continue to expand on an already grandiose legacy that many youngsters should emulate. Not by a longshot are we saying goodbye, we are just saying adieu for the meantime.

From the humble neighborhood of San Cristobal de Los Ángeles to the Santiago Bernabéu, he has become not just the pride of his hometown, but the pride of a country that has always looked for heroes to add to their football lore. I guess it is safe to say that he did a pretty decent job in doing so.

Real Madrid legend Raúl reportedly signs with Schalke 04

It was being reported the past few days that Real Madrid's all-time leading scorer, Raúl, finally signed a two-year contract with German side Schalke 04. The striker's exit was imminent after his reduced role with the Merengues, especially with the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo and the emergence of Gonzalo Higuaín as top scorer of the club for a second consecutive season.

German daily SportBild is reporting that the former Spanish international will be moving to Gelsenkirchen after the team was willing to offer the player six million euros over two years.

Uncapped players highlight Spain final list

Posted by Juan Arango

Spain coach Vicente del Bosque is very low-key by nature. That is why his press conference on Thursday was more about the players than about his decision.

Although the 23-man roster looks to be one of the most solid going to South Africa, there were doses of controversy in certain circles of the Spanish press.

If one begins to look at the roster, well over a third of the club come from two-time reigning champs Barcelona. Eight of the players come from the blaugrana, including new signing David Villa.

In addition to Villa, Spain will count with seven forwards: Future teammate Pedro, former teammates Juan Mata and David Silva as well as Fernando Llorente, Fernando Torres, and surprise callup Jesús Navas. The Sevilla man got the nod over Fenerbache striker and former Pichichi Dani Güiza where he scored 18 goals in 46 matches.

Zamora trophy winner Victor Valdés saw his dream of going to South Africa come true as Del Bosque made him, on paper, his third goalkeeper. Valdés was the Spanish goalkeeper with the least amount of goals conceded as Barcelona were en route to win their 20th league title.

Another big absentee will be Marcos Senna. The Villarreal midfielder will not take part in the World Cup although he was fundamental in La Furia's run to the Euro2008 title when it took place in Switzerland.

The Spanish national team will begin practicing on May 23rd and will have three friendly matches against the United Arab Emirates, South Korea, and Austria before their Group H debut against Switzerland in Durban on June 16th.

La Liga season finale wrap

Posted by Juan Arango

Week 38 saw Real Madrid's dream of winining their 32nd league title go up in smoke. Barcelona dominated for well over 75 minutes despite missing Xavi in the midfield. Who needs Xavi, when you have Yaya Touré. The Ivorian international was fundamental in helping Barca hoist their 20th league title as they beat Valldolid at home 4-0.

After a major scare in the early part of the match, Barcelona settled down and the big man in the middle was fundamental in not just destroying, but creating offense for the Blaugrana.

Barca took the lead on the most ironic of plays. Messi's ball into the box was deflected by Diego Prieto who was all by his lonesome in front of Jacobo. But instead of deflecting it out he tapped it right into his own net. At that point Valladolid had one foot in the coffin and the other one on an oil slick.

Touré would then set up the play that led to Lio Messi's assist to Pedro. Then Touré made a sensation individual play passing a defender and reaching the backline. He placed a millimetric pass to a wide open Lio Messi on the other side of the six and the Argentine netted his 33rd goal of the season. Barcelona were just too much for Valladolid as they return to Liga Adelante next season.

Minutes later, Yaya found Messi and the best player in the world did his magic, scoring his 34th goal of the season. That score put him at the same level as Ronaldo and Hugo Sánchez as the only three players to get to that point in the past 22 years. Messi also became the fourth Argentine, the first since Juan Antonio Pizzi, to be league Pichichi. More importantly, he became the first Argentine since Héctor Yazalde back in 1973-74 to win this distinction.

Since Josep Guardiola arrived Barca have won an whopping seven titles. Lionel Messi is the leading scorer in the world with 85 goals in the past two seasons.

Real Madrid in the meantime played a pallid match against a Málaga side that was going to battle until the bitter end to stay in first division next season. The home side opened the scoring courtesy of a skillful finish by Duda. That would be it for the Anchiovies as Real Madrid would bombard the goal defended by Uruguayan international goalkeeper Gustavo Munúa.

The goalkeeper rejected shot after Real Madrid shot and he was impenetrable. Rafael van der Vaart equalized in the second half with a brilliant individual effort, but it would not be enough as they would leave two points at La Rosaleda and help keep Málaga in the top flight.

The bottom three teams were in very precarious positions and were not able to end up with a positive result. That means that Tenerife and Xerez will follow Valladolid in the drop zone.

Del Bosque announces Spain's 30 players

Posted by Juan Arango

Spanish national team

Barcelona and Real Madrid are the dominant teams in Spain and they proved it by being the two teams that monopolized nearly half of the spots of La Furia's 30-man roster. Barcelona ended up on top as seven of their players earned call ups. There were some surprises in Vicente Del Bosque's list, but for the most part the players that were expected to be on, were.

The majority of the team that won the European championship two years ago and played in the Confederations Cup last summer will be back.

Barcelona's Victor Valdés will have at least a fighting chance to enter Del Bosque's 23-man roster as he was considered part of his 30-man list. Valdés will most likely win yet another Zamora trophy and was among the five goalkeepers called up by the Spanish coach. His level during the past two seasons have been worthy of recognition and should be on the fast track to be in South Africa.

None of Real Madrid's players were named Guti or Raúl as Albiol, Arbeloa, Ramos, Xabi Alonso will follow national team captain Iker Casillas to South Africa.

One of the big surprises was Atlético Madrid's young goalkeeper David De Gea who has become one of the revelations of the tournament. Another surprise call up was that of Osasuna defender César Azpilicueta. He has become a stalwart for the Rojillos. Sevilla's Jesús Navas also got some recognition from Del Bosque.

One player that was left off the squad was Getafe's Roberto Soldado. He was being considered to be a viable replacement for Fernando Torres. His 14 goals for the season have him in La Liga's top ten in scoring.

Some players that were left off the list were Sevilla goalkeeper Andrés Palop as well as Athletic counterpart Gorka Iraizoz. Barcelona forward Bojan Krkic, who decided to not go to Euro2008, was snubbed in favor of teammate Pedro Rodríguez who became one of the revelations of the tournament. Pedro was the first player in football history to score in all six competitions this season. He is also the team's third leading scorer behind Zlatan Ibrahimovic and soon-to-be Pichichi winner Lionel Messi.

Spain will be participating in Group H alongside Chile, Honduras, and Switzerland.

La Liga Week 35 wrap

Posted by Juan Arango

Lionel Messi celebrates after scoring a brace against Villarreal (AP)

The biggest question coming into week 35 was how Barcelona would recover from their midweek shortcomings against Inter in the Champions League semis. They were also facing one of the hottest home teams in La Liga in Villarreal.

Well that answer came quickly and often as Barcelona showed everyone why they are the best road team in La Liga hands down.  They will also try to improve their home record (tops in La Liga as well) as they host Tenerife midweek.  The ball is now in Real Madrid's court as they will face a tough Osasuna side on Sunday and then head to the Ono Estadi in a match that could decide La Liga.

Lionel Messi continued with his trend of responding when needed.  He continued his trend of not being shut out in more than three consecutive matches.  The Argentine international earned yet another brace and saw his goal total reach 29 for the season.

Xavi scored one of the best goals of the weekend with his freekick and Bojan Krkic proved once again his worth in the starting lineup as he scored yet once again in La Liga.  His performance as of late has started to put Zlatan Ibrahimovic on the bench and possibly out of Catalunya as many speculators are starting to mention the Big Swede's exit as David Villa is in the cards for the Blaugrana.

Real Madrid in the meantime had to depend on some last-minute heroics by Cristiano Ronaldo to come away with the three points against a scrappy Osasuna side.  Ronaldo scored a brace as Madrid had to come from behind twice in their 3-2 victory at the Bernabéu.  Ronaldo scored his 20th and 21st goals of the season as they were able to come from behind against Osasuna in a match that saw some skillful goals on both sides of the pitch as well as probably the miss of the season by Macoud as he missed a wide open net.  And we all know that goals that you don't score... are scored on you.

David Villa was not a factor at Cornellà-El Prat against one of the toughest home teams around.  Instead the big man, Nikola Zigic was the difference maker as Los Che have almost assured themselves of a Champions League spot next season after their win in Catalunya 2-0.

With Sevilla playing on Sunday, Valencia could find themselves anywhere eight points clear of Sevilla with nine points left to dispute.    There should be a likely easy match for the Andalusians as Los Colchoneros will take a reprieve as they prepare for their Europa League final in Hamburg against Fulham.

Relegation race

If the race for the title is red-hot, then what adjectives can be used to describe the race to stave off relegation.   Valladolid had a solid chance to make a serious move, but failed to do so as they played to a scoreless draw against Getafe.  Xerez is still dreaming with a chance to stay in the top flight after they beat Alméria 2-1 thanks to an dramatic injury time goal by Bermejo.

Tenerife is now starting to give Málaga, Racing, and Zaragoza nightmares.   They were able to beat Racing at home 2-1 and put the Montañeses in the thick of the relagation race. The bad news for the boys from the Canary Islands is that they will head to the Camp Nou on Tuesday.  Zaragoza were able to maintain their distance as they got an important victory over a Deportivo side that has been in free fall since early March.

Miguel Ángel Lotina's side is now winless in their last ten matches and haven't scored a goal in 449 minutes.

La Liga week 34 wrap

Jeffren celebrates with Ibra, Henry, and Puyol (AP)

Barcelona and Real Madrid continue reaching unchartered waters.

Barcelona sleepwalked past Xerez, condemning them to life in the Liga Adelante next season. The ghosts of Villarreal back in the 1998/99 season when the Yellow Submarine beat Barcelona 3-1. Once again, when given a start Jeffren Suarez is given a start up front he responds. Thierry Henry and Zlatan Ibrahimovic also got back to their scoring ways as they helped the culé extend their unbeaten streak to 12 matches.  They also equaled last year's total of 87 points and will most likely need to earn all 12 remaining points in order to win their 20th title.  The win also all but assures that Xerez will be in second division as they will be, at best, five points behind with four matches left in the season.  Yet despite this frenetic pace, Barca still aren't able to to shake off Real Madrid.

Los Merengues earned their eighth consecutive win on the road defeating a tough Zaragoza 2-1 and kept pace with the Blaugrana.  Raúl and Kaká both were able to score for Real Madrid in a match that was noted more for its rough play more than its skill. Kaká was the difference maker for Madrid as he was fed a brilliant pass from Cristiano Ronaldo to beat Roberto and score the game-winner.   Los Blancos are now one road win away from equaling Barcelona's win record from last year.

Valencia continue to lock up third place as they defeated a Deportivo side in free fall 1-0. Los Ches did little to win, but it was enough as David Villa scored the only goal of the match.

So with their Zaragoza losing and Málaga heading Mallorca, the stage was set for Tenerife to get out of relegation as they play a distracted and erratic Atlético side. Unfortunately for Los Chicarreros Atlético were clicking on all cylinders and Salvio scored a brace to damper Tenerife's hopes.

The most exciting ending of the weekend took place at the Ono Estadi. Victor Obinna scored in the 86th minute to give Málaga the lead, but Mallorca scored the equalizer on a controversial play where

La Liga week 33 wrap

Cristiano Ronaldo celebrates his goal against Valencia (AP)

It was a weekend for defenses in La Liga as only 17 goals were scored, making it one of the lowest scoring rounds of the season so far.

Barcelona's lead over Real Madrid eroded this weekend after they drew with Espanyol in the first-ever derby held at Cornellà- El Prat. Barca lost their rhythm and ended up playing with ten men after Dani Alves was sent off in the 60th minute. Mauricio Pochettino's side executed their strategy to near perfections as they limited the amount of touches Xavi had as well as the opportunities Barca had on goal.

Lionel Messi was a non-factor as the midfield and backline of Espanyol played as if their lives depended on it. They were able to generate the more dangerous options on goal and left the Blaugrana regretting the loss of two points.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid were able to defeat Valencia at home courtesy of a goal by their dynamic duo- Cristiano Ronaldo and Gonzalo Higuaín. Madrid pressured César Sánchez consistently and it took 25 minutes to break the deadlock as Higuaín

Sevilla came back from their loss to Tenerife as they defeated a sorry Sporting Gijón side 3-0. Sevilla defender Cala has become one of the new young stars that has emerged in the league in this tail-end scoring for a third consecutive week.  Add to that goals by Frédéric Kanouté and Luis Fabiano and they went into Champions League positions once again.  They will have to wait for Monday's Mallorca- Osasuna match where they will find out if they will stay there.

Tenerife are slowly able to see the surface and find themselves just a point behind Málaga as they seem to have the best chance to avoid relegation.  Their 3-2 win against Getafe was a shot of adrenaline that no team sandwiching them had.  Nino came up with an important hat-trick to propel team to the win.  What was most historic about the match was that Nino scored the 62,000th goal in La Liga history.

Beyond the pitch: Eva Gonzalez

Posted by Lucas Lugo

Spain is not only known worldwide for good football, it is host of some of the world's hottest women, and Eva Gonzalez is a worthy example.

González participated at the Miss España pageant in 2003, representing Seville. She won the title at the age of 22 and then headed off to Panama City, Panama for the Miss Universe 2003 pageant. She was an early favorite, but she did not enter the Top 15. She wore a flamenco dress at the national costume presentation.

After her reign as Miss España 2003, González entered the world of modelling, walking the runway for Spain's high fashion designers and doing many photo shoots for magazines. She also had a television career. She is one of the hosts of Spanish reality show Dímelo al oído. She had an on/off relationship with Real Madrid goalkeeper, Iker Casillas. They are currently not together.

You are really missing out on something Iker.

She was in Madrid for El Clásico between Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Martínez Bravo points out problem at Real Madrid

Posted by Juan Arango

Plataforma Blanca president Eugenio Martínez Bravo(PlataformaBlanca.com)

The president of Plataforma Blanca, Eugenio Martínez Bravo, has always been the antithesis of Florentino Pérez.  After his team's loss to Barcelona, he texted my good friend in Frankfurt, Germany Jorge Zuazola and talked about the damage being done by current president of the club.

Here is the text.

I will not get tired of saying this... the problem is not the coach...the problem is the model set in place (by Florentino Pérez)...the problem is the club's philosophy... 250 million euros were no good against Alcorcon, Lyon and Barca (who have 13 players from their youth system on their squad compared to Madrid's seven). Florentino Pérez told us in September that "we can dream once again" and that he would change the policies of the past three years in one... so much for Florentino's "3 in 1"... he had an excellent opportunity to change, but he didn't.

He's forgotten about Valdebebas because he doesn't believe in youth systems... Once again it will be the coach's fault. So when will it be the fault of the person that brought them in?
Only when we return to our (Merengue) roots, with OUR players, and that we work with patience along with a long-term club philosophy. We have to believe in a youth system that plays with a similar style as the professional side does. That is when the team will return to glory. Let's put an end to this faux opera at the Bernabeu. Let's bring back our hymn. Let's bring back our "mocitas madrileñas

Sincerely and Hala Madrid

Eugenio Martínez Bravo
President of Plataforma Blanca

Want to thank my good friend Jorge Zuazola for the text. Also thanks to Mr. Bravo for giving permission to post this.

La Liga week 31 wrap

Posted by Juan Arango

Barcelona defeated Madrid not once, but twice. Blaugranas and Pericos defeated their rivals from the Spanish capital in week 31, thus benefiting their respective causes.

Barca were successful in making history defeating Real Madrid 2-0 at the Santiago Bernabéu. Lionel Messi and Pedro scored both goals as Xavi lit the way for a Culé side that at times looked overwhelmed, but when the chips were down they were able to find their way to Iker Casillas. Barca won four straight against los Merengues for the first time ever.

Meanwhile things start to heat up for the upcoming Catalan derby, barring a possible strike next weekend. Espanyol manhandled a toothless Atlético side that were still recovering from the grueling Europa League match against Valencia midweek.

Victor Ruiz, Pablo Osvaldo, and Ivan Alonso scored for an Espanyol side that are just a step away from salvation, while Atlético's European dreams are starting to depend on other teams- specifically Sevilla.

The Andalusians are at 51 points after a tough win at La Rosaleda against Málaga. The same thing goes for Mallorca who defeated a Valencia side that is slowly starting to fall apart. Unai Emery's side were not match for Mallorca at the Ono Estadi and the islanders were able to snap a three-match winless streak.

Historic Barca strut their stuff in Madrid

Posted by Juan Arango

Barcelona swarm Pedro after scoring against Real Madrid (AP)

Football is simple.

If you outwork, outplay, and outscore your opponent... you win. That was exactly the case as Barcelona handily outworked, outplayed, outshot, and outscored their eternal rivals 2-0 in the infallible fortress called the Santiago Bernabéu.  They also made history by beating Real Madrid four consecutive times for the first time ever.

If you had a doubt as to whom you should have picked, well Tommy Smyth did pick Real Madrid to win handily. The advice I was given was to always pick his opposite.

All of the talk in Madrid during the week led up to this moment. But there were some comments that truly foreshadowed what was about to happen. Jorge Valdano talked about "the possibility" of seeing a repeat of last year's 2-6. CYA?

Then on Saturday, Florentino Pérez spoke and said "It would not be considered a failure if we lose (to Barcelona)". CYA? Although what he said was true, those words should of come out of HIS mouth. But then again his mouth was what got him in trouble in the first place.

They had everything in their court to win. There was just one factor-they had the best team in the world.

Tactical changes
Starting with Pep Guardiola's curve ball, bringing on to the pitch a 4-1-4-1 instead of the usual 4-3-3put Madrid in a tizzy.   Having Dani Alves at midfield, position he will most likely play with Brazil in the World Cup, gave Barcelona more projection on the wings and the ability to open up space for Xavi.

Madrid did a decent job of frustrating Barcelona in the early stages of the match with Manuel Pellegrini's implementation of the double-five.  There was one factor missing, Fernando Gago is not the appropriate candidate for that position.  He was not the ideal candidate for that job in this match as Sergio Ramos' excursions into the Barcelona half of the pitch there was  potential to see that sector wide open.

With Guardiola's tactical change, Sergio Ramos did not go on the attack as often as he wanted to.

Madrid lost THE MATCHUP
As was mentioned on Friday, the key to winning the match was not how Cristiano Ronaldo did against Lionel Messi.  The key to winning against Barca was based on how Xabi Alonso fared against Xavi.  His job was below average to say the least.  He was too busy hacking and trying to disrupt the Blaugrana passing circuit and did little to generate offense and connect with Rafael Van Der Vaart.

Xavi was brilliant in the first goal as he chipped the ball into the box for Lionel Messi, beating an offside trap that had Dani Alves and Pedro coming back onside.  Messi was unaccounted for as he trapped and shot the ball past Iker Casillas and Barcelona were up 1-0 after 33 minutes.  For Messi it was his 27th of the season and his 40th overall, expanding his lead in the race for the Pichichi and the European Golden Boot.

Great deal of credit has to be given to Maxwell who quickly restarted play.  He saw the Madrid defenders complain to referee Mejuto González about a previous foul and took advantage of the conceded freekick.

In the 55th minute, Xavi saw Pedro Rodríguez check to goal and Álvaro Arbeloa turn the wrong way and he put a millimetric pass to the islander and Barca would see themselves ahead 2-0.  It was Xavi's change of pace was fundamental The minutes leading up to the goal were a clinic in ball possession.  Barcelona had stretches of 30 and 22 consecutive passes weaving around the Madrid half of the pitch.

That was the back breaker for Real Madrid as the opportunities they wasted on Victor Valdés were finding

"This team always exceeds expectations when they are least expected to,"said Josep Guardiola.

"I have no secrets.  I just have a group of players that play for each other and work very hard," said Guardiola in the post-match press conference when an English reporter inquired about his team's penchant to beat the best teams in England and Europe.

The Sweetest Win
If there was a player that had the greatest feeling at the Santiago Bernabéu after the match, it had to be Gabriel Milito.   Back in 2003, Milito as a step away from being transferred over to Real Madrid.  The move was halted after a physical exam reported that he had not recovered from a knee injury.

He would eventually move to Zaragoza, but many in the Argentine and Spanish media mentioned that the last-minute ditching of Milito was a political move against then Merengue sport director Jorge Valdano by Florentino Pérez as he began his preference for "Zidanes over Pavons".  The Madrid president decided to not sign him based on watching just a few seconds of an own goal he scored with Argentina.

Man of the match
Xavi. Two incredible passes off the foot of the man from Terrassa equalled two goals for Blaugrana.  His difference wasn't seen in just those two passes, it was in the way he was effect in being the team's metronome.

He had all of his senses in top form.  In the last 20 minutes, he was most effective when Andrés Iniesta stepped onto the pitch.  Real Madrid had stretches of five minutes where they did not touch the ball.

Although Lio Messi was the player that wreaked havoc on Madrid's backline, Xavi untangled the mess in the midfield.  Yet it was not that where he stood out. He was able to overcome the consistent marking and hacking of Xabi Alonso and Fernando Gago to make the true difference in the sector of the pitch that proved to be decisive.

For Madrid, the award had to go to Guti.  His entrance in the second half gave Los Merengues a passing dimension that Rafael van der Vaart and Xabi Alonso failed to create.  You can also give an honorable mention to Iker Casillas, who stoned Lionel Messi twice.  Those saves made the score closer than what it actually was on the pitch.

For Barcelona, it is onward as the schedule remains tough for them.  They will host a slumping Deportivo and then head to Cornellà- El Prat for the first-ever Catalan derby at Espanyol's new stadium- that is if the strike is avoided.    Then it is the Champions league semis against Inter and former Barcelona alum Jose Mourinho and Samuel Eto'o.

Meanwhile Madrid will not get quite over Barca just yet.  They head to Almería and face Pep Guardiola's master- Juanman Lillo and then have a crucial match against Valencia at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Clasico Preview Snippet- How will Madrid come out?

Posted by Juan Arango

Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo (AP)

Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdés said this past week that every Clásido is won or lost based on "little things". Ok, there are instances where outstanding individual performances are what set the stage, but for the most part

Whoever says soccer is not is full of it. The game itself has evolved into a chess match and the analysis of such has to be done with a microscope.

One big question mark is the first quarter hour of the match. How Real Madrid comes out at kick off will say a great deal about the way the match will be played.

The match, as glitzy and glamourous as it is is going to come down to the most boring and drab details. The team that does the dirtiest work will come out on top.

Biggest matchup: Xavi vs. Xabi
While the media that runs the world football machine will have you thinking that Messi and Ronaldo will make the difference there is a matchup that could tell the tale. Although that may be true in the scoreboard, the gestation of any goal scoring opportunity or the  will come from the feet of either Xavi and Xabi Alonso.

Although it's a cliché, the truth cannot be more obvious.

If Xabi Alonso beats out his Spain teammate, then Madrid is on the right track to get the three points.  The same goes for Xavi if he is given time and space to be the usual offensive metronome for the Blaugrana.

Xavi will have a formidable task of having to face the pressure of Xabi on defensive while possibly Fernando Gago will be waiting to take clean up whatever mess Alonso makes in his recovery function.

If the Real Madrid coaching staff watched what Arsenal did early on in the match, they saw that the Gunner midfield pressed the defense, and Xavi was blocked out.  He had to play the ball first time; short-circuiting Barcelona's transport of the ball and forcing them into long passes.  This would fall perfectly into the hands of Madrid, forcing their psuedo-trident of Messi, Bojan, and Pedro to fall back and start to attack from their half of the pitch. Barca with little possession is like Roger Federer without a racket.

I have the ball.  Now what do I do?
If there is a team that have players that know what to do with the ball, it's Real Madrid.  Yet there are times that they seem somniferous and the ball movement isn't as fluid as it could be.  They will have to make every touch count and every offensive opportunity mean something- especially if it goes in the back of the net.

Yet, if they come out the same way they have in the previous weeks, their archrivals could make it an unprecedented fourth consecutive over the Merengues.

Player who will have to respond: Gago or Diarra

If you base yourself on probable lineups, Fernando Gago will come out on top over the Mali international.  If I were Manuel Pellegrini I would definitely have Lass in there because he has more marking ability than Gago.  He is also more disciplined when it comes to covering spaces left by teammates such as Sergio Ramos.   Gago does tend to drift a bit and if he is caught too far up when Sergio Ramos ventures upward on offense, Barca could exploit that hole with Pedro.

Watch out for...
Madrid's lines.  If Madrid want to pressure appropriately, they will have to do it in compact fashion.  They have the guns to corral Barcelona, but sometimes they do get too crazy and the spacing between their lines becomes affected.

Keep an eye on the spacing between the Madrid midfield and its backline. If this does happen, expect a possible field day by Lio Messi.  One thing is Xabi Alonso or Fernando Gago attacking the ball... another thing are those two (or any other player) in chase mode.

As we mentioned last weekend, Madrid have all the ingredients in place to win this match.  We usually say that if there is one factor that is relevant is that Necessity always trumps History.  But today we'll find out if Necessity can trump the hunger to make history.

Madrid have the necessity to come out of a shadow that has never been there before.

Madrid need to win in order to justify their offseason.

Madrid need to win in order for CR96 to get the Barca monkey off his back and prove that he does show up in the big games.

Madrid need to win to salvage their season.

Madrid need to win to salvage the Florentino Pérez 2.o.

Do I need more reasons?

Probables

Real Madrid:  Casillas; Sergio Ramos, Albiol, Garay; Gago Xabi Alonso, Cristiano Ronaldo, Van der Vaart, Marcelo, Higuaín

Barcelona: Valdés; Dani Alves, Puyol, Piqué, Maxwell; Touré, Xavi, Iniesta; Messi, Bojan, Pedro

El Clasico: Real Madrid vs. Barcelona

Posted by Lucas Lugo

El Clasico: Real Madrid vs. Barcelona

This is the most important match of the season for Real Madrid and Manuel Pellegrini. When the newly elected president Florentino Perez started his second “Galactico” project he never imagined that the word “failure” would be linked to it. After almost 250 Million Euros spent in signings (Benzema, Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Xabi Alonso, Arbelo and Albiol), Real Madrid was eliminated from the UEFA Champions League on the hand of the modest French side Lyon and took part of an epic fail when they were sacked of the Copa Del Rey by third division team Alcorcon.

On Saturday Madrid needs to win, if they don’t want to end the year empty handed. Now it is too early to say that losing this match could cost the team the league, but who expects Barcelona to lose if it is not to Real Madrid? And things could get worse if Barcelona wins the UEFA Champions league in the Bernabeu (home of Real Madrid). If this were to happen, we will probably not see the same coach next season, and half of the squad would most likely be negotiated.

Saturdays match will have in the field the two best players in the world: Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. We will also have the chance to see most of the Spanish National team: Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos, Carles Puyol, Albiol, Arbeloa, Xabi Alonso, Xavi Hernandez and Iniesta, all we need is Fernando Torres (Liverpool) David Silva, (Valencia) and David Villa (Valencia) and we have the starting XI.

Madrid’s main concern is how to stop Lionel Messi. After an stunning performance against Arsenal, scored 4 goals and got the attention of the press worldwide. Arsenal head coach Wenger said “He is a player from the playstation”, describing his incredible qualities.

Pellegrini has decided to place Arbeloa (a natural right footed) on the left back, to avoid Messi from moving inwards, he has also reinforced the left wing with Brazilian Midfielder Marcelo. However, Pellegrini is not taking measures to cover Xavi and Iniesta, And what about Dani Alves and Maxwell?

Madrid’s hopes lie in the hands of Cristiano Ronaldo and Gonzalo Higuain, one of the most feared attacking couples in Europe. Guti is playing his last derby, and Pellegrini is putting his job on the line.

It’s the “group” of stars of Real Madrid against the Team of F.C. Barcelona.

Guti could say goodbye after "El Clasico"

Posted by Lucas Lugo

Guti confirms he will be playing his last “Clasico”
During an interview with Onda Madrid, Madrid’s playmakers said that he has a feeling this will be the last time he plays against Barcelona wearing the Real Madrid jersey.

Guti said “I don’t have a clear idea about my future. Surely I will be my last Clasico. As of today I have no chances to continue, I have one more year in my contract but I hope to reach an agreement. I know they will understand, my choice is leaving the club”. He mentioned that he does not want any kind of drama, that is something that was coming and the best thing is to leave the club in a decent manner.

Guti, will finally say goodbye to the club that saw him grow, both as a player and individual. Guti first made his debut in the first squad in 1995, 15 years later he could be saying goodbye. His numbers with Real Madrid:

UEFA Champions League: 1997–98, 1999–00, 2001–02
UEFA Super Cup: 2002
Intercontinental Cup: 1998, 2002
Spanish League: 1996–97, 2000–01, 2002–03, 2006–07, 2007–08
Spanish Super cup: 1997, 2001, 2003, 2008

Guti began his career with Real Madrid in 1984, as a forward during his years in la cantera, but soon was moved into the midfield. He made his official debut on December 2 1995, in a match that Real Madrid won 4-1 against Sevilla.

Guti has guaranteed that he will not retire from football, instead he wishes to continue his career somewhere else, maybe England, Italy or the Emirates.

Joking during the conference he said, “Xabi Alonso wants my number 14, I think he will do honor to the number”. He also recommended the club to sign Cesc Fabregas and David Silva, both players would bring a lot of quality to the club.

Guti could have been a better player if it wasn’t for his night life and repeted issues with different coaches through his career. To finish the interview he said “ My heart will always remain with Madrid”.

Personally, I will miss seeing Guti in Madrid. To me, he is one of the best players in his position, sure, he is not constant, but when he feels like playing, he does it and very well.

Lionel Messi celebrates with Dmytro Chygrynskiy against Athletic (AP)

Barcelona and Real Madrid did what they had to do in order to remain equal in points prior to next week's clash at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The Blaugrana steamrolled over Athletic in a match that was a testament to the muscle that the club's youth system has. Of the 14 players that Barcelona fielded on Saturday, 11 came from the La Masia.

There was a negative to the Blaugrana's performance as Zlatan Ibrahimovic suffered a muscle tear in his calf and will be out for the midweek Champions League clash against Arsenal.

When a door closes a window cracks open and Bojan Krkic was able to take advantage of the situation by scoring a brace for the first time this season.   Lio Messi and Jeffren Suárez also scored for Barca while Susaeta would score the lone goal for the Basques.

Meanwhile Real Madrid were very effective as they defeated a struggling Racing Santander 2-0.  Cristiano Ronaldo and Gonzalo Higuaín scored yet once again for Los Merengues as they will rest and wait for the Blaugrana to visit the Spanish capital at the weekend.

Valencia asserted themselves in third place as they defeated Osasuna 3-0 in a match that was closer than the final score indicated.  David Villa scored a brace and Joaquin would add another tally for Los Ches.

Sevilla ended their six-match winless streak beating Tenerife at hime 3-0.  Frédéric Kanouté and Luis Fabiano scored for the Andalusians in the first half and José Castro scored his first goal of the season as the Nervionenses entered Champions League spots after Mallorca were tripped up as they earned only one point on the road against Almería.

Saturday
Sevilla 3-0 Tenerife
Barcelona 4-1 Athletic
Zaragoza 2-0 Málaga

Sunday
Valladolid 0-2 Villarreal
Getafe 1-1 Espanyol
Almería 1-1 Mallorca
Sporting 2-2 Xerez
Racing Santander 0-2 Real Madrid
Valencia 3-0 Osasuna
Atlético 3-0 Deportivo

The ball is in Madrid's court now

Posted by Juan Arango

Real Madrid prepare for El Clásico (AP)

If mentioned back in November that Real Madrid's Clásico at the Nou Camp was the most important match in the Galáctico 2.0 era. This was the match where Florentino Perez' big spending and free wheeling attitude had to be justified. He also had to show the world that his team was greater than Barca's Pep Team.

Although Madrid did show that they caught up to the greatest Blaugrana side ever, they were not able to accomplish their mission. So if that match on November 29th was a litmus test for the Merengues, the match on April 10th trumps it by hundred fold.

Real Madrid spent the money they did to win games like these and the conditions could not be more perfect than now. They are playing at home where they have not lost in La Liga. Their last loss at the Bernabéu was in the Champions League groups stage again AC Milan.

They are not a juggernaut... they are an offensive war machine. Madrid have bombarded La Liga opponents, outscoring them by a whopping 39-12 since they last lost against Athletic at San Mamés back on January 16th. Credit Ronaldo and Gonzalo Higuaín for nearly 60% of that scoring output.

Madrid are finally gelling. They have gotten to know each other better during this stretch and their results in league play are no accident. Now, their swoons in certain matches could be a huge concern. the best case and point was against Lyon in the return leg of the Champions League.

Lack of concentration against teams like Sporting and Getafe do sound off air raid sirens, but they can rectify those situations with their rapid-fire offense. Against teams like Barcelona and other top teams in Europe, that is as easy to do.

This time at the Santiago Bernabéu there are much more things at stake than just the three points. A Barcelona win, and I am not talking about a 2-6 result, or even a draw could like the Titanic hitting the iceberg. Heck, even a draw would be bad news for Madrid as the head-to-head tiebreaker would come into play, thus favoring the Blaugrana. This is not by any means the end of La Liga as there will be eight more matches to be played after this, but it could spell the beginning of the end for Real Madrid.

If they are able to finish better than they did at the Camp Nou, they could be well on their way.  But there are other factors that they have to consider such as the individual talent on the other side of the pitch as well as the sum of the parts.

This is not a case of getting ahead of themselves, because Josep Guardiola has literally brainwashed a group of players into buying his "one match at a time" mentality. Although many think that Barca took Athletic lightly at San Mamés thinking ahead, the Blaugrana (as well as Madrid) know that if there is one team to not underestimate... it's the Basques. They definitely will not take Los Leones lightly on Saturday as they know what is on the line.

Madrid will play against a Racing Santander side who will come out with a player who is already dreaming in white in Sergio Canales.

While the Madrid press bash Guardiola for "underestimating" Real Madrid, Barca's coach knows that one slip up could cost him on either of two fronts. The schedule for the Blaugrana is brutal and has been since the latter part of March. After beating Zaragoza 4-2, they had to battle in Mallorca to beat the islanders 1-0 and drew at Arsenal 2-2.

Now they face Athletic, host Arsenal, go to Riazor to face Deportivo, and then cap it all off with the Catalan derby at Cornellà el Prat. If Madrid win, there is a good chance that it could be as their schedule is not as difficult as their rival's. Let's be honest, and with all due respect... Almería (possible trap match), Zaragoza, and Málaga on the road as well as Valencia, Osasuna, and Athletic at home give them the advantage by a country mile over the Blaugrana. The match that could decide things for Real Madrid is their trip to the Ono Estadi as they face Mallorca on May 5th.

So la Liga is over after El Clásico? It could be. Real Madrid have everything in their favor from here on out. So if they do not obtain a win next week or win the league title, they can only blame themselves.

Well, for Barca it's the end... of the beginning.

The countdown to El Clásico has officially begun.  Who do you think is going to win?  Why?

Check out Simply Fútbol all of next week for the latest on one of the most awaited matchups of the season in world football
