Apertura week three wrap

Posted by Juan Arango

Rogelio Funes Mori celebrates goal (TuPost.com)
Week three in the Argentine Apertura started to see the cream of the crop rise to the top and a contender really start to hit the crapper.

Vélez Sarsfield took advantage of a missed call in order to cash in a 2-0 win against reigning champs Argentinos Juniors. Leandro Somosa cashed in on the errant penaltly call.  In the defense of Rafael Furchi, his line judge did not see the call while Furchi did see the collision in the box.

Meanwhile Rogelio Funes Mori scored a brace propelling River Plate to join Ricardo Gareca's side to the top of the standings beating Independiente 3-2 at El Monumental.  "The Bison" (as some fans of the team want to call him- reference Juan "Buffalo" Funes) Funes Mori scored two goals in the first 20 minutes of the match as Los Millonarios had to hold on in the final minutes of the match in order to earn the three points.  So far this tournament, the former FC Dallas youth product has scored four goals in the first three matches of the season.

Meanwhile the Claudio Borghi era at Boca Juniors is getting worse everyday.  This weekend they were the victims of a huge upset at the hands of newcomers All Boys.  Emanuel Perea and Mauro Matos were the offensive sparks for an Albo side that left Boca perplexed and clueless on the pitch.

Meanwhile Nicolás Cambiasso, brother of former River Plate and current Inter midfielder Estaban Cambiasso earned a clean sheet against the Xeneize.  In the process they also earned their first win against Boca in over 30 years.

Claudio Borghi is officially on the hot seat.  He also announced after the match that he might leave if Boca do not win next weekend at La Bombonera.

Argentine League: Transfer Market

Posted by Lucas Lugo

The Argentine football league will officially begin on August 8th, with three new teams competing in the first division (All Boys, Olimpo and Quilmes). Everyone has been busy in the market, but two clubs that have really gone all out are Boca Juniors and River Plate. It’s not uncommon to see this, considering both teams are going under really tough times.
Boca Juniors rebuilt their whole back line, starting with the goalkeeper Christian Luchetti, and defenders Insaurralde, Caruso and Cellay. River did the same thing, bringing back Juan Pablo Carrizo, and signing central defender Jonathan Maidana (former Boca Juniors) and Arano.
The team that has suffered the most from the transfer market is Velez Sarsfield, who lost a lost of players to other clubs, something to consider when they have to face two tournaments, Sudamericana and Apertura.

Hector Reynoso can cause Chivas elimination from the Copa Libertadores

Posted by Lucas Lugo

Velez Sarsfield (Argentina) lost 3-0 against Chivas de Guadalajara (Mexico) in the first leg of the round of sixteen of the Copa Libertadores. The first goal was scored by the Hector Reynoso, the Mexican international had been suspended by the CONMEBOL and his ban had not been removed.

In a 2009 Copa Libertadores cup game against Everton from Chile, Hector Reynoso spat several times on the face of Sebastian Penco after threatening to pass him the swine flu virus (AH1N1), which was considered a pandemic disease last year. After the match Reynoso apologized for his actions, but that did not stop the suspension.

Reynoso played against Velez Sarsfield despite the suspension and this could cost Chivas the ticket to the next round, giving Velez Sarsfield an automatic go. This is sad considering the fact that Chivas outplayed Velez.

El Fortín captured its 7th Argentine title on Sunday with a dramatic 1-0 over Huracán. The match was the last game of the 2009 Clausura and might have been the most memorable "championship" match in Argentine club football history. The game & trophy winning goal was scored in the 83rd minute by Maximiliano Moralez. After some 13 minutes of added time, the whistle blew and the Estadio José Amalfitani exploded as Vélez Sarsfield captured the title. Vélez was the only team to go the entire tournament undefeated at home and only lost once during the whole Clausura tournament. For their impressive championship campaign, Club Atlético Vélez Sársfield can add Mad About Fútbol Team Of The Week to their trophy case.

2nd Place = Club Estudiantes de La Plata (ARG)

The Chicago Fire moved to the top of the Eastern Conference on the strength of their 2-1 road win against the Colorado Rapids. Goals by Guatemalan forward Marco Pappa & Colombian forward Wilman Conde on Independence Day helped The Fire break a 3-game losing streak.

Congratulations to Bolivar and Cerro Porteño for winning their domestic tournaments over the past weekend. Bolivar captured its record 16th domestic title in winning the Bolivian Apertura and Cerro Porteño won its record 28th domestic title by capturing the Paraguayan Apertura.

Vélez Wins '09 Argentina Clausura

Posted by Anonymous

http://www.lostiempos.com/diario/actualidad/deportes/20090706/media_recortes/2009/07/06/36302_gd.jpg
The last round of matches of the 2009 Argentine Clausura featured a "championship" game as 1st place Huracán traveled to 2nd place Vélez Sarsfield for a match the entire Argentine footballing nation would be mesmerized by. The match began as normal but after 20+ minutes the game was delayed due to visible hail slightly smaller than golf balls.

After the hail passed, it didn't take long for the match to take shape. In the 25th minute, a penalty was awarded to Vélez when forward Juan Manuel Martinez was taken down in the box by Huracán defender Carlos Araujo. Hernán López stepped to take the spot kick but Huracán keeper Gaston Monzon made a massive save.

In the 30th minute, Vélez looked to have their goal when a header from a corner kick was cleared off the line by well-placed Huracán defender Carlos Arano who used his head to make a big save. 12 minutes later, Huracán defender Eduardo Domínguez had his header attempt denied by the crossbar.

The championship goal came in the 83rd minute when Vélez forward Maximiliano Moralez buried a loose ball in the box. The controversial goal came after Vélez substitute forward Joaquín Larrivey appeared to have fouled Monzon after they both went for the ball and Larrivey inadvertently kicked Monzon just after the keeper knocked the ball away.

The 1-0 scoreline would hold up after 13 minutes of added time after the last few minutes of regulation were delayed by a mysterious disappearance of game balls. The delay caused an expletive laden tirade from Huracán coach Ángel Cappa. The last two minutes turned a bit ugly when players from both sides got testy with Vélez defender Sebastián Domínguez ending the match bloodied after referee Gabriel Brazenas finally blew the final whistle.

Huracán was valiant in defeat but Vélez's dominant home form carried them to their 7th Argentine title. El Fortín was the only team to finish unbeaten at home for the entire Clausura tournament as Ricardo El Tigre Gareca wins an Argentine 1st division title for the first time in his managerial career.
