Soccer 4 Life campaign begins with a bang

Posted by Juan Arango

Fresh off the success that was their Jerseys 4 Life promotion, our friends over at Soccer Pro are kicking off their Shoes 4 Life campaign this summer and the anticipation for this event is as big as the World Cup. Ok, I might be exaggerating just a bit.

The goal of this campaign is to raise funds and collect shoes for children and families across the globe who do not have any. Partnering with Soles4Souls, the international shoe charity, SoccerPro hopes to encourage soccer fans to work towards the greater good.

Fans and customers alike are asked to send their lightly used boots and these will be given to various children around the world that will definitely put them to good use. There will be one lucky donor that will have the opportunity to earn US$1,000 as a result of their participation in this movement.

If you would like to donate to the Shoes 4 Life campaign, click here.

If you would like to know where your nearest Soles 4 Souls drop off site is located, find out here.

Trinidad & Tobago Women top their Group in Gold Cup qualifiers

Posted by Sheldon Scipio

At the Marvin Lee Stadium, Centre of Excellence, Macoya last week Trinidad & Tobago National Women Team qualified at the top of Group F for the Gold Cup 2010. The Soca Princesses finished un-defeated beating Guyana, Barbados and St Lucia, conceding just 1 goal and scoring 14. The T&T attack was led by the return of Ahkeela "Lady Latapy" Mollon who is based in Sweden. Her constant run down the flanks, through the middle and crosses tormented opposing defenses. The T&T Team was in general to quick, strong and fit for their opponents, and Tobago-born Kennya Cordner showed her tenacity, speed and goal-scoring ability from either the left flank or as a centre forward.

Guyana finished 2nd with a Team consisting of mostly foreign-based players, the team from Guyana showed great composure and were the 2nd leading scorers with 11 goals for and conceding only 3 (to T&T).

Trinidad & Tobago ladies will now move on to the next phase of Gold Cup qualifying, and play in the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) games to be held in Puerto Rico from July 17th to August 1st.

Posted by Sheldon Scipio

FC Santa Rosa enjoyed two more home wins on Saturday 15th. May, in the 2nd. round of the TTFF National Youth League.

In the U-14 Division the little Cannons bounced back from a 4:3 loss in their opening match to wi 1:0 against Cap Off Youths FC. After a goal-less 1st half, Jamaal Lewis scored in the 37th minute of the 2nd half with a volley from inside the penalty box after a Hakeen Baird free-kick.

The U-16 Cannons jumped to the top of their group with a 5:1 thumping of Moruga FC. The visitors had claimed four points from their first 2 matches but were dominated and beaten by a rapidly improving Santa Rosa team. Keheil Williams opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a header from a corner, with Antonio Auguste stretching the lead in the in the 23rd with a cheeky back-heel inside the goal area. Andre Rampersad confrimed the Cannons superiority with a crashing volley in the 30th. minute from inside the penalty area, after a free-kick by Captain Xacpierre de Fou.

Moruga scored a disputed goal in the 62nd. minute after the ball was kicked from the (A.J. Darya Rodriguez ...From the Savannah to possibly Singapore

Posted by Sheldon Scipio

Simply Futbol: How old were you when you started playing football?

Darya: I was around 12/13 when I started playing football.

SF: What was your inspiration to play the Beautiful game?
Darya: My sister Dani was my inspiration at that time in my life, I would do everything that my sister did, and she played football. So I joined because of her, and also my cousin was used to play for a team and was the captain, I guess I was a follow fashion kid........

SF: Who is your favorite Player? Why?
Darya: I would have to say Petr Cech is my favorite player, because after all his intense injuries, he inspires me to keep going no matter what.

SF: How does it feel to become a National Player?
Darya: Becoming a National Player is an extraordinary feeling, representing all the people you pass by pushes you to do your best!
SF: Who would you like to publicly thank for this opportunity?
Darya: I would like to thank my Coach Jason Spence, and all the National U-15 Coaches who have worked with me to make me become much better, and My MOM for always being there, pushing me and supporting me!

SF: Where do you think Football can take you?
Darya: I think it can take me to College abroad and many different countries
SF: What are your present goals and aspirations re Football?
Darya: My goals are to get better, and to keep giving my best and much more, I also want to get a scholarship to study abroad.

SF: How has Football changed your life in general?
Darya: Well ....... I hardly have a social life that's for sure (she laughs), but in the end it's all worth it. It helped me meet a lot of people, and it also helped to create life-long friendships.

SF: What is your most embarrassing football moment?
Darya: hmmmmmm, it was when I got the most embarrassing goal of all time, The ball went straight through my legs and scored, ...................... now that was embarrassing.
SF: What is your best memory so far?
Darya: My best memory was the 1st game I ever played, I had just gone to support Dani (my sister), who was playing. They needed a goalkeeper, my sister volunteered me ....... and all of a sudden I had on a jersey and gloves that were too big for me .... I was put into the goal, and no I didn't save all, but I saved some and that kept me going.

Darya Rodriguez is currently with the Trinidad & Tobago U-15 Girls team that is preparing for the Youth World Olympic Games in Singapore, she represents St Francois girls at the College level, Jason Spence Soccer Academy, and is a We Are Futbol(TT) Player. We wish her and Trinidad & Tobago all the best in Singapore!
