Complacent Argentina cruises past timid Mexico

Posted by Juan Arango

Mexico faced Argentina yet again in the World Cup and in the second round to boot. The Aztecs were looking to avenge the loss from Leipzing four years earlier and also reach that ever-elusive fifth match that has been slipping away from them ever since they hosted the World Cup back in 1986. That was not to be as Argentina would come out on top 3-1 in controversial fashion.

South Africa vs. Mexico - Match Wrap

Posted by Anonymous

VS.

The vuvuzelas were in full effect in Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg as the 2010 World Cup finally got underway. After words from FIFA President Sepp Blatter and South African President Jacob Zuma and handshakes from representatives of the South African and Mexican football associations, the ball started rolling and the opening match began.

The Mexicans came out strong the first 10 minutes as the Bafana Bafana probably experienced some nerves and El Tri took advantage. In the 2nd minute, Mexico's Paul Aguilar crossed into the box the ball was fumbled by South African keeper Itumeleng Khune and Giovani Dos Santos jumped on it and shot but South Africa captain Aaron Mokoena deflected it away safely.

The Mexicans continued to pressure the South African goal in the first half, Guille Franco missed open headers in the 14th & 39th minutes. In the 34th minute Carlos Vela chipped over the South Africa backline to a cutting Guille Franco in the box whose leaping touch was deflected away by Khune.

The first goal of the game appeared to have been scored off a corner when Dos Santos' corner kick bounced off Guille Franco's chest past Khune to an open Vela who poked the ball in at the far post. However, the goal was disallowed as Vela was called offside despite a South African defender sitting on the goal line.

South Africa settled their nerves towards the end of the first half and began to unlock the Mexican defense. In the 44th minute, Teko Modise played a nice pass to Siphiwe Tshabalala down the left side who sent a cross to striker Katlego Mphela but Mphela couldn't get his head to the ball and it sailed through the box untouched with no damage to Mexico.

In the 2nd half, the moment all of South Africa waited for came in the 54th minute off a well-played counter attack. A nice 1-2 with Steven Pienaar and Mphela at midfield freed Tshabalala as Mphela played a well-placed through ball down the left side to Tshabalala who got into the box behind the Mexican defense and fired a GOLAZO past Mexican keeper Oscar Perez in the upper corner of the goal for the 1-0 lead.June 11, 2010 - 06020929 date 11 06 2010 Copyright imago South Africa s Siphiwe Tshabalala Scoring His sides Opening Goal FIFA World Cup 2010 Group A South Africa v Mexico 11th June 2010 PUBLICATIONxNOTxINxUK men Football World Cup National team international match Johannesburg Opening match Action shot Vdig xsk 2010 horizontal Highlight premiumd.(Photo © 2010 ZumaPress)

Mexico equalized in the 79th minute when a centering pass from Andres Guardado found Rafael Marquez alone in the 6 yard box. The Barcelona defender blasted the ball past Khune for the 1-1 score. A mistake by Mokoena kept Marquez and 2 other Mexican players on side putting Khune in an unenviable position.

South Africa almost pulled out a dramatic 3 points in the 90th minute, when Khune sent a long ball up the pitch catching the Mexican backline off guard and playing Mphela behind the defense with a defender on his back, Mphela shot deflected off the near post as he tried to sneak a shot past Perez.

The final whistle blew and the match ended 1-1, South Africa is now unbeaten in 13 straight matches and South Africa keeps African teams unbeaten in World Cup opening matches. South Africa faces Uruguay next on the 16th in Tshwane/Pretoria while Mexico next takes on France on the 17th in Polokwane.

The Netherlands unmasks the weaknesses of Mexico

Posted by Lucas Lugo

The side coached by Van Marwijk defeated Mexico 2-1 with two goals of the Arsenal strike Robbie Van Persie. Mexico tied the match through Chicharito Hernandez.

The result did not reflect the match; in fact if The Netherlands had been more precise the difference could have been bigger. The Mexican coach Javier Aguirre left the match with more problems than solutions.

The main concern was on defense: Moreno, Magallon, Torres Nilo and Aguilar did not offer any guarantees.

Mexico lost the second game in a row in one week, the first one 3-1 against England. They will face Gambia on Sunday and Italy on June 3rd.

Powerade begins World Cup campaign for Hispanic market

Posted by Juan Arango

>
Powerade has made their ties with the Hispanic market stronger and what better way to establish itself than by having one of the most marketed players in the US as their spokesperson.

Mexican international goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa is in a series of spots that that are geared toward promoting the ION4 sport drink that came out in March of 2009. Powerade Latino is first-ever Spanish marketing campaign being done by Coca Cola North America in an effort to further promote Powerade specifically to the ever-growing Latino market in the United States.

"The POWERADE Latino campaign is part of our broader FIFA World Cup activation this year, reaching more consumers and refreshing them on and off the field with our brands,” said Jose Serafin, senior brand manager, Hispanic Marketing, Coca-Cola North America. The soft drink giant is one of the official sponsors of the world's biggest sporting event to take place in South Africa.

The Spanish-language advertising campaign will be activated starting June 1 in major U.S. Hispanic markets, and will be supported with a fully integrated marketing platform that includes broadcast, print, out-of-home, online, in-store and product packaging. Three 30- second TV spots featuring Memo Ochoa produced for the POWERADE Latino campaign will premiere during the first match of the FIFA World Cup, Mexico vs. South Africa, on June 11.

The commercial was shot in Mexico and it consists of a special training session where the Club América goalkeeper was going to undergo an intense session in a goal interlinking two separate pitches.

The purpose of this was to promote the replenishment and properties of the ION 4 when an athlete is undergoing an intense workout and its ability to nourish valuable elements lost in training.

Hector Reynoso can cause Chivas elimination from the Copa Libertadores

Posted by Lucas Lugo

Velez Sarsfield (Argentina) lost 3-0 against Chivas de Guadalajara (Mexico) in the first leg of the round of sixteen of the Copa Libertadores. The first goal was scored by the Hector Reynoso, the Mexican international had been suspended by the CONMEBOL and his ban had not been removed.

In a 2009 Copa Libertadores cup game against Everton from Chile, Hector Reynoso spat several times on the face of Sebastian Penco after threatening to pass him the swine flu virus (AH1N1), which was considered a pandemic disease last year. After the match Reynoso apologized for his actions, but that did not stop the suspension.

Reynoso played against Velez Sarsfield despite the suspension and this could cost Chivas the ticket to the next round, giving Velez Sarsfield an automatic go. This is sad considering the fact that Chivas outplayed Velez.

Introduction of El Mexi Hick

Posted by Juan Arango

Buenas a Todos!!!

First off, I would like to give a big shout-out to Juan Arango for giving me the opportunity to Blog with Simplemente Football. It has been a long, and hectic 2 years since first speaking with Juan, and I am finally in the position to BLOG on SIMPLEMENTE FOOTBALL. In the coming weeks, months, years; I will be focusing on the Mexican National Soccer Team AKA "El Tri". Raised in Monterrey, Mexico and educated in Eastern Washington (USA) and graduating from the University of Washington (Seattle) I plan on providing insight articles pertaining to not only factual but also biased BLOGS on EL TRI. I was raised playing baseball AND passionately following soccer; therefore, I would enjoy any kind of debate on my biased posts as that is what makes sports, competition and free speech great. I tend to blog on experiences and issues that I have experienced and hope everyone has an input on my blogs...with that being said...

My first blog will be titled LA JOVENTUD DE MEXICO (MEXICO'S YOUTH). This blog will focus on Mexico's future stars whom are actually current stars. As Mexico staggered from a #5 FIFA ranking to a #20 in 2006, many failed to realize what was occurring in the 2005 U-17 World Cup where future Mexican stars were emerging to become a powerhouse for the future Mexican National Squad...something interesting, however, many of these stars will not be found in Mexico since the 3-0 ass kicking of Brazil in the final. My first blog will give answers to the questions that many as..."Where did Carlos Vela, Giovanni Dos Santons, and Hector Moreno come from?" Furthermore, Javier Hernandez? Manchester United? Thats right... The first Mexican national player join Manchester United...oh, did i mention he's only 21 years old???

STAY TUNED!!!

Manchester have Hernández... so what do they have?

Posted by Juan Arango

What will new Manchester United signee offer the Red Devils next year? (El Diario)

The buzz in the Mexican media is evident and if one were to read all the headlines coming out of the Aztec media there is a sense of pride in the transfer of Javier Hernández to Manchester United.

For many, he might not have needed the Mexican media machine or his position at Chivas to really make a leap of this level. He is sincerely that good and his potential became reality very quickly in his first two years fresh out of the Sacred Flock's youth system.

There was a certain buzz all throughout the Manchester United camp as they signed a player that will have the possibility of replacing Dimitar Berbatov.

He is doing what only two other players have done in the history of Aztec ball- play for one of the biggest clubs in the world.  This is an honor held only by Hugo Sánchez (Real Madrid) and Rafael Márquez (Barcelona).  We all know what paths they have etched in world football.   Many expect him to do great things in England; a place that has seen players like Jared Borgetti fail miserably with much lesser clubs.

His talent was overshadowed by injury as well as the emergence of Carlos Vela and Giovani Dos Santos in the 2005 U-17 World Cup. Hernández was present two years later at the U-20 held in Canada. For the Aztecs he was a welcome addition to the nucleus of the U-17 side that won it all in Peru. That was the first "Chicharito"sighting.

For many, Hernández will be more like Márquez and Sánchez than Borgetti or Cuahtémoc Blanco (Valladolid).  He is one of the few Mexican players to have, literally, all of the tools to be successful on the pitch.

So what type of player exactly did Alex Ferguson sign and what are these tools I am talking about?

First of all, "Chicharito" Hernández is explosive off the dribble. He can blow by defenders from all angles and come at you from different positions if need be. Coming from the right, Hernández will give that support to Wayne Rooney and open even more space for the Premiership's leading scorer- that's a scary thought.

He has the potential to give the Manchester attack a semblance on offense of a consistent threat since Berbatov has failed to do so.

He creates space with his dribble.  "Chicharito"can changed directions at the drop of a dime.  He can turn a tiny crease in the defense into a gaping hole with just one cutback.   He will be a huge beneficiary of the tough marking that Wayne Rooney endures to make a name for himself, and then feed Rooney after defenses adjust to him.

He is one of those players that plays for his team and that is something that can pay dividends.

"(Chicharito) has great human qualities and is a very good footballer as well."- Chivas coach José Luis Real

Physically, although he seems fragile, he has a low center of gravity which allows his to remain on his feet. This will neutralize the Premiership defenders that will try to out-body him. He has enough smarts

He is very effective in the air as he can attack the ball. So if there are any taller defenders underestimating "Chicharito", they could be in for a big surprise.

Most importantly, they are getting a player that has the game in his DNA. His grandfather and father have fed him the game since he was in the womb and that does say a great deal. He will adapt well as his close circle has helped him remain focused in his young career.

This influence reflectos on the pitch in the way he carries himself.  Respectful, hard worker, but most of all... hungry for success.

Accolades have come his way since he has stolen the spotlight in Mexico:

"A potent version of Hugo Sánchez... but without the prepotence."

"A good version of Borja"

"An improved Luis García"

For some those names might mean little, but to his game it is a roadmap that could guide him to success in a league that is as competitive as the Premiership.

Some might not think that is important, but it is. Having a grandfather that played in the 1954 World Cup as well as a father that played in 1986, that is enough help to help him overcome anything that Manchester can throw his way.

If United are patient with Hernández, like that have been with other talented youngsters that have stepped foot onto the Theatre of Dreams, they could witness a player that will accustom fans to be shocked. Of course, there will be a period of adaptation that he will have to endure, but if you know anything about this kid is that he is as mentally strong as they get.

For those of you who might doubt him taking the pressure of the expectations, well one thing is for sure... he handled the Mexican media quite well. Let's be honest the press there pick fights and try to chum the waters as good as any English reporter out there.

Still he was able to succeed and even excel in his humble and respectful ways. The media have actually become his best ally based on his merits on the pitch.

For Manchester fans this could be a refreshing site as he brings a sense of humility to the game. And that could be the first step in enamoring a group of fickle fans.

Manchester sign Chicharito Hernandez

Posted by Juan Arango

New Manchester United signing Javier "Chicharito" Hernández

A Mexican football player makes history again.

This time Chivas star Javier Hernández is picked up and will apply his craft in one of the most competitive leagues and biggest clubs in the world.

Javier came out of Chivas youth system and showed a great deal of potential After scoring 11 goals in 16 matches in the second half of 2009, Hernández ended up as the third leading scorer in Mexico. He truly broke out in the Bicentenario 2010 tournament socring six goals in his first two matches. Arguably the hottest player in the Mexican league, "Chicharito"has made waves with club and country and found himself on the radar with several European clubs like PSV and reigning Bundesliga champs Wolfsburg.

"Chicharito" (The Little Pea) was nicknamed after his father, Javier Hernández who was part of Mexico's 1986 World Cup team alongside Hugo Sánchez, Tomás Boy, Carlos Hermosillo, and Luis Fernando Tena.

Hernández, 21, will join the Red Devils in July after his participation in the world and as soon as he obtains a work permit in the UK. Signing terms on the agreement were not disclosed.

Márquez considers Tri retirement

Posted by Juan Arango

Barcelona defender Rafael Márquez hinted at possibly retiring from the Mexican national team on Friday.

"It will be my last World Cup and it is time to step aside and give youngsters a chance," said Márquez. He also attributed his decision to the extensive amount of traveling (sometimes through nine time zones) in order to report for international duty.

During his storied career, "El Kaiser de Michoacán" won the same amount of international titles (16) that the legendary Hugo Sánchez has. Márquez began his career in Atlas' vaunted youth system and quickly became noticed by national team coach Manolo Lapuente as well as AS Monaco coach Claude Puel. There he became one of the best defenders in Europe and in 2003 move to Barcelona for eight million euros.

Once he made his debut with the Catalan giants on he asserted himself in the backline and became a team leader playing in 235 matches and scoring 12 goals for the blaugrana.

Rafa made his debut with Mexico on February 7th, 1997 against Ecuador and eventually earned 86 caps for El Tri. He would take part in the 2002 and 2006 World Cups with Mexico and would score one goal against Argentina in Germany in the second round.

He should crack the top ten in caps for his national team side before the World Cup as he is only three behind Jared Borgetti in that category. If anyone had illusions of attaining the top spot, dream on. Claudio Suárez has that category locked doubling the former Monaco and Atlas man with 178.

Mexico- WC Team Breakdown

Posted by Anonymous

With the 2010 FIFA World Cup less than 4 months away, its time to breakdown the 32 teams that will be participating in The Great Tournament. Next up is the CONCACAF nation of México.

http://www.seeklogo.com/images/F/Federacion_Mexicana_de_Futbol-logo-5442F01B33-seeklogo.com.gif
Official Name: Federación Mexicana de Fútbol

Nickname: El Tri

FIFA Confederation: CONCACAF (Central, North America, and Caribbean)

FIFA Code: MEX

How They Qualified: 2nd place in CONCACAF Final stage

World Cup Appearances (Including 2010): 14

Best WC Finish: México 1970 & México 1986, Quarterfinals

World Cup Record (MP: Wins - Draws - Losses): 45: 11W - 12D - 22L

Head Coach: Javier Aguirre

Most Capped Player (# of caps): Claudio Suárez (178)

All-Time Goal Scoring Leader (# of goals): Jared Borghetti (46)

Brief Footballing History:
Historically, México has been the dominant force in CONCACAF despite the recent emergence of the US Soccer. El Tri is the most decorated CONCACAF side and its domestic league is the richest in the region and probably in all of the Americas.

No CONCACAF team has been to more World Cups than México and the Mexicans participated in the 1st World Cup in 1930. El Tri is trying increase its profile outside of CONCACAF with a deep run in South Africa. In recent years, México has scratched the surface of its potential when they won the 1995 FIFA Confederations Cup and its youngsters won the U-17 FIFA World Cup in 2007.

Player To Watch:
The Mexican player to watch was a member of the winning U-17 side in 2007 and has been an important part of Coach Javier Aguirre's plans. Barca fans certainly know him. His name is Giovani Dos Santos.

http://espndeportes-assets.espn.go.com/2003/photos2009/0116/m_dossantos_300x300.jpg
The 20-year old México-born son of a Brazilian footballer is the present and future of the attacking, creativity part of the Mexican midfield. Under Sven Goran-Eriksson's reign as Mexican coach, Gio was ignored but Aguirre has found a place for him. Dos Santos' youth & athleticism provides an excellent compliment to the experience and deliberate ball handling of Mexican midfield icon Cuauhtémoc Blanco.

Outlook:
El Tri have advanced out of the group stage in the last 4 World Cups and have the talent to do it again. They are in a tough group but can look to 2002 when they won Group G and went unbeaten in a group consisting of Croatia, Ecuador, and Italy.

México's goal is the same as it has been since its last quarterfinal appearance in 1986: Advance to the semifinals. Although few people see El Tri as a serious contender to get to the semis, this tournament is unpredictable and Javier Aguirre has México playing confidently so this could be the year that México makes it.

Final 23-Man WC Roster:
Goalkeepers: Oscar Perez (Chiapas), Guillermo Ochoa (America), Luis Ernesto Michel (Guadalajara).

Defenders: Rafael Marquez (Barcelona), Ricardo Osorio (Stuttgart), Francisco Rodriguez, Carlos Salcido (both PSV Eindhoven), Hector Moreno (AZ Alkmaar), Paul Aguilar (Pachuca), Efrain Juarez (Pumas UNAM), Jonny Magallon (Guadalajara), Jorge Torres Nilo (Atlas).

Midfielders: Andres Guardado (Deportivo La Coruna), Gerardo Torrado (Cruz Azul), Israel Castro (Pumas UNAM), Giovani dos Santos (Galatasaray, on loan from Tottenham); Pablo Barrera (Pumas UNAM),

Forwards: Adolfo Bautista, Alberto Medina (both Guadalajara), Cuauhtemoc Blanco (Veracruz), Carlos Vela (Arsenal), Javier Hernandez (Manchester United), Guillermo Franco (West Ham).

WC Group Schedule:
June 11 vs. South Africa
June 17 vs. France
June 22 vs. Uruguay

The next team preview of Group A sides is Uruguay

Indios Kits Convoluted

Posted by Juan Arango

After their magic carpet ride into the semi of the Mexican Liguilla, Indios have found people to sponsor them and they were not shy to show their appreciation... to each and every one of them.

Not even the use of external aesthetics and beautiful models could not hide the fact that Indios Juarez' newest kit is just enveloped in ads. Although would prefer to look at the models, I was not able to find the team's crest. Is that a sign of the times in Mexican soccer?

Amid the models with geisha and punk hairstyles, the kits designs are good (especially the away unis) but they get upstaged by the propaganda.

Thanks to TSC for the photos.

Pumas Debut With Puma

Posted by Juan Arango

The reigning Mexican champs made a splash in Mexico City on Wednesday night as they presented their new line with German outfitter Puma. Long gone are the days where Lotto was their designer of preference.

So top secret was the information about this new jersey that when they went to Los Pinos to go visit the president, Felipe Calderón, he was given the "old" jersey. So no exclusive even for El Presidente.

So behind all the pomp and celebration of the club's history as well as their titles, Pumas divulged to the world what they not have and it is quite impressive. The kit will be part of the jersey that will commemorate the club's centenary and there were a few little knick knacks that will make this jersey so unique.

There is a combination of past, present, and future in this jersey. The traditional Puma on the front of the jersey will remain, but with a different texture. The design of the first jersey (white) is not benefited by this while the others seem to fall in place with the Puma template that has been so effective with other clubs. The color scheme of the first jersey in combination with the pattern is what kills it and overdoes. If you start to look at the second jersey (blue), third (gold), and the goalkeeper outfit the pattern favors these designs based on their color schemes more because they are more subtle.
Then there is also the exclusive "100 years" on the left sleeve that signify the special occasion for the Mexico City club. Puma passes with a C-, I don't think that they obtained the true essence of what the fans were looking for and instead went way out in left field to go for the overly spectacular; not achieving that in the process. My friend Marc will be the ultimate test of approval and he is not as nice as I am .

Colombia To Play Ecuador In Medellín

Posted by Juan Arango

The Colombian Football Federation (FCF) confirmed today that the Cafeteros will be hosting their neighbors to the south in September at the Atanasio Girardot in Medellín and not in the Colombian capital of Bogota. The notion was being tossed around as soon as the final whistle was blown in the Peru match last week which the home side won 1-0 keeping Colombia´s fading World Cup hopes alive.

The FCF also made a petition to CONMEBOL in order to change the kickoff time to 4pm local time on September 5th due to pending travel plans that the Colombians have after the match en route to Montevideo as they will face the Uruguayans in a do or die clash at the mythical Estadio Centenario. Colombia are currently in seventh pace with 17 points and still have an outside shot of obtaining that fifth and final spot in that region´s qualifiers, thus earning them a playoff spot against the fourth place team from CONCACAF currently held by Mexico.

Mexico, Japan Invited To Copa América 2011

Posted by Juan Arango

Come swine flu or yellow fever, Julio Grondona was not going to lose this opportunity. It seems like nothing happened, but in an extraordinary meeting in Nassau, the FIFA vice president and AFA boss extended a hand to both Japan and Mexico for the 2011 Copa América to be held in the austral nation.

All that would needed now is the ratification of the other nine confederations that make up CONMEBOL. For fans of the United States this comes as a shock as they were not looked at, but there is still an outside shot that the Yanks might have in the event that these two nations do not receive the proverbial thumbs up.

As far as swine flu is concerned, CONMEBOL has made amends and has a plan to execute in the eventuality that the disease is an issue. This was part of the reason why there was a fallout between both CONMEBOL and the FMF, leading to Mexican sides San Luis and Chivas withdrawing from the Copa Libertadores.

Japan would be making their return to the Copa América after taking part in the 1999 edition held in Paraguay. Mexico in the meantime will make their eighth appearance since 1993 where they ended up in second place behind Argentina. In every single tournament they have come out of the group stages and have ended up in the semis five times.

Grondona also confirmed that La Plata, Córdoba, Jujuy, and Santa Fe will all be venues the tournament in 2011.
