Even though he will not be present on the pitch at the Camp Nou on Tuesday against Arsenal, Gerard Piqué made headlines on Monday as he presented his new autobiography "El Viaje de Ida Y Vuelta" (The Roundtrip).

In this book Piqué talks about his experience from his beginnings at Barcelona's youth academy and his move to Manchester United then his eventual return to Catalunya with a pit stop in Zaragoza.

"It narrates the story of a dream come true. It's about the adventures of a boy that wants to for Barcelona's first team above everything else. In the end he achieves that; but lots of things happen along the way, like having to go to Manchester United," said Piqué.

In an interview with Catalan daily Sport, Piqué also mentions that he owes his success in the past two seasons to Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola.   He mentioned how much then-rookie coach Guardiola risked by putting an inexperienced Piqué out on the pitch.  From that point the hometown boy emerged from youth product to one of the best central defenders in the game. Piqué's  2009 calendar year was dream-like as he was part of a Blaugrana side that became the first Spanish team to win the treble and first European team to ever win six trophies in one year.

"From a football standpoint, (Pep) gave me everything.  I will never be able to repay him for risking himself with me.  I understand that my return to Barcelona was not normal after playing so few minutes at Manchester."- Gerard Piqué

This book has only come out in Catalan but there should be editions in English and Spanish coming months, so when that does occur... we will review that book for you here on Simply Futbol as we did so with others in the past.

Fútbol Pensado brings the mind back to the game

Posted by Juan Arango

Johan Cruyff said it best when he said that soccer is ¨a game played with the mind¨.

Argentine writer and educator Edgardo Broner took that concept to heart and united two concepts that are working in complete synergy- soccer and the mind.

So far this southern hemisphere summer, Broner's latest book Fútbol Pensado (Cerebral Football) has become one of the most popular publications. "It is a way to play with football while you're not playing football, " as the promotions mention the book.

His latest book, is a book that helps realize the fact that in the Beautiful Game, the mind is the part of the human anatomy that needs to be exercised more than any other in order to truly appreciate and feel the passion that a game like soccer generates in other parts of the world.

Club Victoriaa prides itself for the only team in the world that has never lost at home. In order to maintain that privileged distinction, as soon as they lose they immediately change their name. They were then called Victoridab, Victoriac, and so on. They would end up being called Victoriap. Knowing this much how many points would have they earned in a 38-week tournament?

His 86 challenges were extremely stimulating and brings forth another feature of the game of soccer that very few people think about nowadays. Very few think about the mental processes that are involved in a game where strategy and tactics also depends on the mental sharpness of the players on the pitch and their ability to think on their feet.

Legendary play-by-play announcer Victor Hugo Morales described the book to a tee as he mentioned the need for journalists to "stimulate thought and challenge readers to talk about the issues at hand with not just words, but ideas."

The main concept behind Fútbol Pensado, in addition to entertain, is to be able to look at the game from more than one aspect. "It is an idea based on years of work and the inspiration of others that helped me now to let it go away,"said Broner.

For educational purpose, Broner combined knowledge with passion. It is a foreign concept that the establishment has overlooked, but Broner was able to tap into that with something as simple as sport.

"Many of us learned how to read by reading the sports section of the newspaper or reading publications like El Gráfico. This is part of our passion and what better way to approach kids to learn about the game as well as a wide variety of subjects." - Edgardo Broner

Broner's career has been able to transcend what he is enjoys as a profession and what he is passionate about; in the process living a very fulfilled life. Edgardo Broner is a former professor at the Universidad Simón Bolívar in Caracas, Venezuela. He has been involved in covering soccer events since 1990 as he covered the World Cup in Italy that year.

His educational background comes to the surface as he appeals to different tools in order to solve some of the problems behind his book. In various problems the reader will have to appeal to eight math, logic, knowledge of the game, and history of the game.

Dr. Broner's is also currently working with this idea in several public schools in the Buenos Aires area and the "Football math" project has received a great deal of positive feedback from students, teachers, and educational officials in the Argentine capital.

This project, in addition to the book look to have big plans ahead for them. Although the short term has the author working on a sequel to the book and the educational program to continue. In the long term there is a great possibility for the book to be published in English and for other sports as well.
