From Diablos to Mechita: The disaster that is America

Posted by Juan Arango

Throughout the 50's and 60's América was mired in mediocrity.  They were the laughing stock of Colombian football but the fans remained faithful to that "Mechita"(string) of hope.  The team was exactly that as they fought to avoid relegation.

Their fortunes changed slowly in the late 60's and in the 70's began the push towards becoming contenders.  That finally came to fruition in 1979.  After coming up short a couple of times before, América arrived to the top of the domestic mountain.

After that they emerged into one of the glamor teams of South American football.    Adding players like Ricardo Gareca, Julio César Falcioni, Juan Manuel Battaglia, as well as former New York Cosmos star Robert Cabañas and many of the top Colombian players such as Willington Ortiz and Anthony D'Avila.  There the

If the past 24 hours have not been a display in ineptitude and complete desperation, then nothing is. It is so sad to see a club that in the past 30 years was mired in glory, despite the controversy, to have come down so low. I am not condoning what the people that ran the club during those glory years did, I am only talking about what the players and teams did on the pitch. América are literally on life support and are trying everything in order to remain afloat.

If we mention the problems that this once-glorious club has right now there is no doubt that we would have to do a five-part (hmmm, sounds like a good idea) feature on it.

Within this time period we've seen the players finally decide to stop playing after being owed nine months worth of wages. And with time running against them, they began to take a "react then think approach".

One of the first steps was to sack coach Jorge Bermúdez due to his lack of efficiency in his role as coach.  The former América and Boca Juniors man so far has not been able to revert the adverse situation that the Cali club is currently going through on the pitch.

Now comes the next step.  Who do we hire?  There were names being thrown around, but many of them refused based on the fact that there was little guarantee of payment outside of what the Dimayor could help pitch in.  That might not have helped because one of the conditions in which the players were going to come back and play was only if the club reinstated Bermúdez as coach.

So much for that plan.
According to reports from the Colombian media, Dimayor president Ramón Jesurún and the club agreed to split the costs on one month's wages of the nine that are currently owed by the club.

This little detail helped propel the players to jump on a 6am flight to Medellín and play Envigado in a match that will mean much more than pesos and centavos to the club. In the end, all the drama was good for a soap opera as they came in and dismantled a hapless Envigado side 3-1.  The win helped their cause in the relegation race, but still sees an uphill battle on the promotion end.

The win might have eased anxieties a little bit, but the reality is still there.  The team still owed their players eight months worth of wages.  They are fighting for their first division lives.  Jorge Bermúdez is still at odds with the media and the club.  The club is still between two entities that are completely cash-strapped and fighting against the tide and the effects of the Clinton List.  The latter had a dubious effect especially with any corporations that deals with an entity on that list.  Every single possible avenue for revenue was removed and that is a major hindrance if a club would like to operate properly.

In other words, América will look to fight another week.

Menezes calls up European-based players

Mano Menezes called up 22 European-based players for his upcoming training session in Barcelona next month.

Two players will be making their respective debuts with the Canarinha. Shakhtar Donetsk man Douglas Costa as well as Inter's new signing- 18-year-old Phillipe Coutinho- will get some international experience and try to fight for a spot for the upcoming Copa America.

There are players like Porto target man Hulk will be making his return to the national team in September. The same thing goes for Hoffenheim playmaker Carlos Eduardo. The Brazilian was a vital part of the team's explosion onto the scene two seasons ago in the Bundesliga and should be a consistent callup in the coming months as well.

On the goalkeeping end, two of the top youngsters currently playing in Europe were called up and early on it would seem that Diego Alves would be the front runner to threaten Julio Cesar's starting job; although do not count out Spurs gatekeeper Gomes either.

Goalkeepers: Diego Alves (Almeria

The University of Miami athletic department announced on Wednesday that the women's soccer team will be joining forces with MALAIKA for Life this upcoming season.

The Lady Canes will don these new bracelets in their season opener against the Florida Gators in Gainesville this coming Friday.

The non-profit organization is currently being run by former Lady Canes footballer Kristen Kenney.  Their mission is to help promote and educate communities all through Africa as well as help prevent the spread of malaria throughout the continent.  They help generate revenue through the selling of African bracelets.

EPL opening weekend wrap

Stamford Bridge, Chelsea v West Bromwich Albion, Premier League 14/08/2010 Didier Drogba of Chelsea celebrates his hat-trick Photo Marc Atkins Fotosports International Photo via Newscom

Hope everyone enjoyed what was a very interesting first week for the Barclay’s Premier League. We saw a slow start in the opening match between Tottenham Hotspurs and Manchester City. Yet things improved as the day went on. Chelsea tallied an impressive six goals in their return to action. While newcomers Blackpool sent Wigan fans for a loop, scoring four goals on the road. American keeper Tim Howard had a slip up in goal. While David Jones showed off his set piece skills. Squads are still unsettled with Manchester City leading in the category.

Aston Villa meanwhile weren’t rattled at all by the loss of Martin O’Neil. If the season continues like this we’ll have some great highlight reels for the vault.
Manchester City proved that money can’t buy happiness on Saturday.

Unorganized is quite an understatement for this club. Players making a positive showing were YaYa Toure and David Silva. I was impressed with Toure’s speed and creativity. He’ll be a big part of squad’s success.  Meanwhile Joe Hart locked himself into the starting role with an impressive display. Tevez was disappointing and appeared to lack fitness.

No big deal though as he will recover and be the main threat for this club. Hopefully Balotelli will be by his side for next week. Adebayor made a surprise appearance as well, or did he? Nothing really positive to take from this game for City fans expect that you came away with a point. A tough week for them ahead with a Europa League game and Liverpool at home four days later.

Spurs showed they have a lot of promise and scoring threats. Tottenham was close to getting a win but 0-0 was the end result. Gareth Bale looked impressive and will be a big scoring threat for the club. He was unfortunate not to be credited with any offensive points as he sent in some beautiful passes as well. Assou-Ekotto looked a real threat and almost scored on a cracker from long distance. Aaron Lennon looked strong and will easily break his tally of three goals from last season.

Crouch was effective but mainly with his head. His success depends directly on the balls coming in from his team mates. He may struggle to find the net as much as last season. Their next opponents are the Young Boys in the Champions League Playoff Round. The Swiss side needs to be taken seriously as they recently knocked off a big club in Fenerbahce. They see Stoke on the road after and should be happy to come away with a draw. A lot will depend on the Champions League result though.

Things heated up after the first match as viewers got to see twenty-one goals in the following seven. Chelsea led the way with a trifecta of sorts. A Drogba triple, Malouda double, and Lampard single on the sheet against West Brom. In what was a great day to be a Blue’s fan as they backed up their scoring record. Malouda changed the score early in just the 6th minute. The first half saw two goals but West Bromwich Albion lost their nerve and began making errant challenges near the eighteen.

In the end it was too many set pieces for Didier. Two goals of his hat-trick were from such a spot. The performance earned him a substitution in just the 70th minute. The first thing West Brom can work on is their set piece walls. Players must have felt they were facing a firing squad with their twisting and turning. Look for Chelsea to continue the damage against Wigan next week.

Aston Villa surprised a few with a great three goal win against West Ham. Milner should reconsider his move to City after the victory. Especially since West Ham were more organized than the club at the Eastlands. The guidance of Kevin MacDonald seems to be working for the time being. Carew had a few good chances and Marc Albrighton was playing phenomenal. Ashley Young looked great and played some beautiful crosses into the area. I can only hope that Milner makes the right choice and forgets the big money offer. Look for Villa to continue their run against newly promoted Newcastle. West Ham should rebound nicely against Bolton at home.

Other matches saw Blackburn defeat Everton one to nil. Tim Howard made an unfortunate error that cost his side a point.

Bolton held off Fulham at home in a scoreless draw. Bobby Zamora is back and almost scored a long range effort. He will be a big part of this squad and hopefully remains healthy. Clint Dempsey didn’t feature but another USA national Stu Holden rattled one off the post.

Sunderland and Birmingham had an exciting match. It ended with four goals total and a point a piece for the clubs. The Black Cats will be disappointed after blowing a two goal lead in the second half.

Wolves continued their EPL success with a two to one victory over Stoke. David Jones scored a spectacular free kick that one wouldn’t expect to see in the top flight. Anyone that hasn’t seen it is missing out.

Sunday we witnessed what looked to be Liverpool’s downfall. However after Joe Cole's first half sending off David N’gog scored a bomb in the 46th minute. Almunia could have done better but it may be Given or Mark Schwarzer in net soon. Arsenal bounced back with a late own goal error by Reina. Set up by the new transfer Marouane Chamakh. Chamakh or “The Raptor” as I’m calling him looked reserved in this game. Hopefully he will turn up the intensity after settling in.  A one to one draw was a fair result for both sides.

The last game of the week will see Manchester United taking on Newcastle. A tough draw for the Toon Army, can they hold off the Reds? I’m thinking it will be a good match with less than two goals. Let’s see if Rooney turns it up in his return to the EPL.

ARGENTINA BEGINS NEW JOURNEY WITH BATISTA

Posted by Pibe de Oro

The Argentine national team will start from scratch with new head coach Sergio Batista on Wednesday when they take on Ireland in Dublin. The Albicelestes will look to recover from their embarassing performance against Germany in the World Cup quarterfinals.

Although Batista is on a interim basis until the end of the year, he will be looking to take advantage of his opportunity to grab the reigns of this team as they prepare for the 2011 Copa America and the 2014 World Cup qualifiers.

Argentina will see the return of many star players that took part of the World Cup in Souh Africa. Much like Batista, many players on the roster for the match against Ireland will be looking to secure their spot on the team. Lionel Messi did not want to miss this chance to play despite having to fly across the world to join Argentina in Dublin. Atletico Madrid star Sergio Agüero returns as well as Carlos Tevez although the Manchester City striker may miss the match due to the flu. Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano will keep the captain's armband while Inter Milan hitman Diego Milito will get a chance to impress Batista. Despite a recent tour in the United States with Real Madrid, Gonzalo Higuain will also be present to try to wreak havoc among the Irish defence.

Batista, who led the team to an Olympic gold medal in China in 2008, will use a 4-1-4-1 formation or a 4-3-3. During a press conference on Tuesday, Batista said he does not want his team to depend solely on Messi and will try to build a team that will focus on patience and creativity when it has possession of the ball.

Argentina will not only have to face Robbie Keane and a tough opponent who is looking for revenge after being eliminated unfairly in a World Cup qualifier against France, but the Argies will also have to overcome a disappointing finish in the last World Cup and all the chaos left behind after the Diego Maradona-Julio Grondona breakup. Batista seems serious as he looks to implement his own long term project for the team, but his job security is also riding on thin ice because it is not clear if he will keep his job after December.

Argentina's probable lineup at Aviva Stadium on Wednesday: Sergio Romero; Nicolas Burdisso, Martin Demichelis, Walter Samuel, Gabriel Heinze; Javier Mascherano; Lionel Messi, Ever Banega, Fernando Gago, Angel Di Maria; Diego Milito or Gonzalo Higuain

Argentine court rules against Camoranesi

Posted by Juan Arango

June 20, 2010 - Nelspruit, South Africa - Mauro German Camoranesi of Italy is seen during the FIFA World Cup 2010 soccer match between Italy and New Zealand at Mbombela Stadium on June 20, 2010 in Nelspruit, South Africa.
Mauro Camoranesi (Zumapress)

Rough play is part of any sport and football is not the exception. Some challenges are of the criminal type... at least we say that in the figurative sense.

But on Monday a court in Argentina ruled against the Italian international in a court case that saw him as the defendantin a case that was 16 years in the making.

According to daily Clarín, the Civil and Commercial court of the city of Mar Del Plata ruled that the World Cup winner would have to pay damages that ended the career of Roberto Pizzo back in 1994 when he played for second division side Aldosivi.

Judges Ramiro Rosales and Roberto Lostaunau decided that the Juventus midfielder "grossly misinterpreted the rules of the game" and "acted in an excessive and brute manner which was abnormal and preventable."

The former Cruz Azul and Banfield man challenged Pizzo in an overly aggressive fashion.  The challenge saw the former Alvarado man sustain a torn ACL, MCL, and right and left menisci.  Not only that the player also underwent an extensive rehabilitation, but his career was over.

This coincides with Camoranesi's negotiations that have him probably moving to Birmingham for the upcoming season after nine seasons with Juventus.

Meanwhile the lone judge who voted against this decision, Alfredo Méndez,  stated that it was "purely incidental" and "part of the game".   Méndez said that it was a typical action action where two players went after a divided ball.

Could this court decision start a litigious firestorm if one player seriously fouls another?

Let the madness begin... I guess.

Amorebieta takes Venezuela over Spain

Posted by Juan Arango

Fernando Amorebieta to play for
Venezuela (Zumapress)

The new FIFA rule that allowed players over to play for another national team gave a chance for many to have an international career.  There were several players from the national youth levels that were locked in with a specific national side and were hopelessly waiting for a callup that most likely will never arrive.

The rule allowed some of those players that never declared themselves to be able to make their move.

Jermaine Jones, Neven Subotic, and Giuseppe Rossi are three of the most recent cases that fans in the US can relate to for better and for worse.

For French fans, well Gonzalo Higuaín was the tease that only Raymond Domenech thought would become a reality.

In the case of Venezuela with Athletic Bilbao central defender Fernando Amorebieta, it was a romance that finally came to fruition. Amorebieta has reached a crossroads in his career and made one of the biggest decisions he will ever have to face.  The wishes of Venezuelan national team coach César Farías became true when the 25-year-old Amorebieta committed to his country of birth and ended his career with the Spanish national team.

After two previously failed attempts, Venezuela Football Federation president (FVF) Rafael Esquivel got the verbal commitment from Amorebieta and the Bilbao defender will make his debut with the Vinotinto in September as they prepare for next year's Copa América.  The defender did get called up once by coach Vicente Del Bosque back in August of 2008 for a friendly match against Denmark, but never played.

Amorebieta, born in Cantaura, Venezuela, was always being looked at by Venezuelan coaches despite committing to the Spanish youth teams early on.

Amorebieta becomes the first player since current Vicenza forward Massimo Margiotta to nix the team that they played for to suit up for the Vinotinto back in 2004.  Margiotta was part of the Italian U-19, U-21, and Olympic team back in 2000.

Now Venezuela have a big acquisition that helps them shore up their defensive backline.  A vital pickup if they intend to make Brazil 2014 their first-ever World Cup appearance. Now the next big question for Farías is... will Barcelona youngster Jeffren Suárez follow suit?

Vélez shows style, River suffer as Apertura kicks off

Posted by Juan Arango

River Plate striker Gabriel Funes Mori (AP Photo)

The Argentine league is off and running and there was a dose of excitement throughout the weekend as they began using the Jabulani.

With the exception of Gimnasia-San Lorenzo and Godoy Cruz-Boca, every other match had a one-goal difference.  Some teams showed their stuff as was the case with Vélez Sarsfield who also won with ease.  Others like recently promoted All Boys played well, but lost to Banfield 2-1.

The teams showed their intentions to play and rust, amid extremely cold conditions.   But the most impressive side this weekend was Vélez Sarsfield as they dominated an Independiente side that was being penciled in as a contender for the title this semester.

River Plate was disappointing in their home debut against Tigre and they were looking to avenge their 5-1 loss to the boys from the Delta in their Clausura finale.  For well over 90 minutes they battled and had problems cracking the Tigre backline.  It would take another brilliant play by Ariel Ortega and former Dallas FC youth player Gabriel Funes Mori headed the ball home.  There was a dose of controversy as Tigre coach Ricardo Caruso Lombardi  was sent off after he was arguing about the fact that Ortega supposedly fouled a player en route to the game-winner.

Boca Juniors would debut on the road and would fall behind early on in Mendoza against Godoy Cruz, but Lucas Viatri would equalize in the 21st minute.  This match was probably one of the more exciting ones of the weekend.  Omar Asad once again had to be looked at as a coach that fielded yet another competitive squad and looks to be in the running or will at least make lots of the noise in the Apertura.

Claudio Borghi's side looked rusty at first but after the Viatri goal the team did a good job to gel and create opportunities in the end.  In the final minutes, Boca suffered and Godoy Cruz had chances hit off the post and miss by inches.

Friday
Arsenal 1-2 Lanús

Saturday
Quilmes 1-1 Colón

Argentinos Juniors 1-2 Huracán

Newell's Old Boys 0-1 Estudiantes

Racing Club 1-0 All Boys

Sunday
Banfield 2-1 Olimpo

River Plate 1-0 Tigre

Gimnasia LP 0-0 San Lorenzo

Vélez Sarsfield 1-0 Independiente

Godoy Cruz 1-1 Boca Juniors
