2009 Brasileirão Wrap - Week 1

Posted by Anonymous 5.11.2009

The opening weekend of the 2009 Campeonato Brasileiro was not a good one for sides from the state of São Paulo. Of the 6 Paulista teams in the Brasileirão only one side captured 3 points on the opening weekend. Palmeiras defeated Coritiba 2-1 with a late goal from young striking sensation Keirrison in the 88th minute.

The two big Paulista sides suffered 1-0 losses. Corinthians playing without the services of Ronaldo lost in São Paulo to Internacional of Porto Alegre. Ex-Lyon forward Nilmar scored a brilliant individual footwork laden goal in the 8th minute to give the O Colorado the victory.

As for the other big Paulista side, defending champions São Paulo lost in the Maracanã to Fluminense 1-0 as Maurício scored a Golazo in the 3rd minute to sink the Tricolor Paulista. The win marks a great start for Carlos Alberto Parreira as coach of Tricolor Carioca.

The other Paulista sides drew 1-1, Barueri drew on the road against Sport Recife, Santos drew on the road against Grêmio, and Santo André drew at home against Botafogo.

Cruzeiro continued their winning ways with a 2-0 home victory at the Mineirão against Flamengo. Former Dynamo Kiev forward Kléber converted a PK in the 29th minute to help A Raposa to victory. The 3 points sees them atop the early table, earlier in the week Cruzeiro defeated La U de Chile 2-1 on the road in the 1st leg of their Round of 16 Copa Libertadores matchup.
