With the exception of Boca-Defensor, the Round of 16 matchups are finished with the drama of Pks deciding a quarterfinal spot. The all Brazilian tie between Sport Recife & Palmeiras was even at 1-1 on aggregate after Sport's Wilson scored in the 82nd minute of their 2nd leg match in Recife. However, Recife's nerves and big game inexperience were exposed as Palmeiras' keeper Marcos saved 3 Sport PKs to send Verdão into the quarters against Nacional of Uruguay.

Grêmio put their feet on the throats of Peru's San Martín with a 2-0 home win and a 5-1 aggregate destruction. The #1 seed Grêmio now faces Caracas FC in the quarters. Caracas mutilated Deportivo Cuenca 4-0 at home and advanced 5-2 on aggregate to their 1st ever Libertadores quarterfinals.

Thursday saw the long awaited play of title favorites Boca Juniors as they played their 1st leg of the Round of 16 against Defensor Sporting of Uruguay. Boca got two big road goals from Martin Palermo & Rodrigo Palacio in a 2-2 draw. Rodrigo Mora's 84th minute goal gave the Uruguayan side the equalizer and a chance at a massive upset in the 2nd leg at La Bombonera in Buenos Aires.

Cruzeiro advanced to its first quarterfinals since 2001 with a 1-0 home win versus La U de Chile. Kleber's goal in the 75th minute secured a 3-1 aggregate victory and ensures a quarterfinal matchup with fellow Brazilian side São Paulo.
