The 5th Round of the 2009 Campeonato Brasileiro blazed across Brazil on the heels of the national team's massive 4-0 win on the road against Uruguay in World Cup qualifying. Internacional's perfect season came to an end with its 1-1 draw on the road against Cruzeiro. Wellington Paulista's goal early in the 2nd half was enough to split the points with Inter after Magrão gave Inter the early lead in the 4th minute. O Colorado Gaucho still remain unbeaten and in 1st place.

Cruzeiro's arch-rival jumped into 2nd place with a victorious and dominating performance. Atlético Mineiro defeated Atlético Paranaense 4-0 on the road in Curitiba. Mineiro forward Éder Luís scored twice late in the 2nd half to bury Furacão to the bottom of the table. The Belo Horizonte outfit are one of three unbeaten teams remaining in the Brazilian Championship.

Santos continued their offensive onslaught on the Brasileirão with their wild 3-3 draw on the road against Santo André. The teams alternated goals as the highest scoring duo in the Brasileirão made their mark. Kléber Pereira opened the scoring in the 7th minute and Madson added his 3rd goal of the season in the 24th. It wasn't enough to give Peixe the win as the draw dropped Santos to 4th place in the standings.
