The eyes of Brazil were transfixed on South Africa as the Seleção battled the United States in the final of the Confederations Cup. The Campeonato Brasileiro continued on toward crowning a champion as Round 8 of the Brasileirão is officially in the books.
Newly promoted Gremio Barueri ended Atlético Mineiro's unbeaten season with an emphatic 4-2 win at home. Barueri finished Galo with 2 quick goals in the 84th & 85th minute by Thiago Humberto and Marco Pimentel, respectively. Those two strikes cancelled out a couple of PK's by Mineiro striker Diego Tardelli who moved to the top of the Brasileirão goal scoring charts. The victory moved Barueri into a surprise 4th place standing in the table.
Internacional bounced back from midweek Copa Do Brasil disappointment to beat Coritiba at home 3-0. Recently acquired Ecuadorian forward Luís Bolaños scored a hat trick in a 10 minute span in the 2nd half to keep O Colorado in 2nd place in the standings.
Atlético Paranaense moved off the bottom of the table at the expense of the newly crowned Copa Do Brasil champs, Corinthians. Paulo Baier scored his 1st goal of the season on a free kick GOLAZO for the 1-0 home win at the Arena da Baixada. Furacão are now unbeaten in their last 3 matches while the loss ended Corinthians' 3-game unbeaten Brasileirão match streak. Check out the goal:
The Fla-Flu rivalry match in the Maracanã ended in a 0-0 draw as big name strikers Fred of Fluminense and Adriano of Flamengo could not find the back of the net. Despite the scoreline it was an offensive match with both sides having numerous goal scoring chances. Fluminense was most dangerous in the 1st half and Flamengo turned up the attack in the 2nd half. This was the 2nd time in the last 3 matches that Flamengo has been held without a goal.
