2009 Brasileirão Wrap - Week 9

Round 9 of the Serie A of the 2009 Campeonato Brasileiro witnessed the return of Internacional to the top of the standings. O Colorado Gaucho shut out Náutico 2-0 on the road in Recife. Nilmar returned to action after his time with Brazil in World Cup qualifiers & Confederations Cup to score twice in the 2nd half. Internacional's shutout solidifies their place as the best defense in the Brasileirão.

Inter's arch-rival Grêmio bounced back well from their semifinal exit from the Copa Libertadores with an emphatic 4-1 win at home against Atlético Paranaense. 3 goals in the 1st 11 minutes with Argentine striker Maxi Lopez scoring the 1st two goals in the first 6 minutes of the match. It was Grêmio's 1st win in any competition in a month.

Atlético Mineiro fell from the top of the standings into 2nd place after their disappointing 1-1 draw at home against Botafogo. Éder Luís scored his 5th goal of the season for Galo in the 15th minute but Juninho quickly equalized 8 minutes later for Botafogo as neither side could capture the points in the 2nd half. Atlético Mineiro have given up 7 goals in their last 3 matches as Botafogo now sit one spot from the bottom of the table.

The last match of the round happened on Wednesday as Corinthians defeated Fluminense 4-2 at home at the Pacaembu. Ronaldo scored his 1st goals of the 2009 Brasileirão campaign with a hat-trick. O Fenômeno scored twice in the 1st half and when Fluminense came within one goal in the 2nd half, Ronaldo's goal in the 85th minute sealed the win for Timão. Corinthians are unbeaten in 4 of their last 5 matches and sit in 5th place in the table.
