Although the weekend was marred by fan violence once again, the Colombian league did have some quality matchups to showcase this past weekend. The marquee matchup of the week was a battle between the top two teams in the current standings. Independiente Medellín went into Huila and were the first team to beat Los Bambuqueros at the Guillermo Plazas Alcid in seven matches. Jackson Martínez was the star of the show for El Poderoso as he scored a brace against Huila, the 41st and 42nd career goals for the youngster. Despite losing, Huila remain in first place but Medellín has cut that lead down to a single point. This was their first loss since back in May when they lost to Junior in Barranquilla 4-0.
Another youngster that has been turning heads has been Giovanni Moreno as he scored the only goal of the match in Nacional's win over Cúcuta. Nacional's unbeaten streak has now reached an incredible 12 matches without knowing how losing feels. Although they are winning under former Lanús coach Ramón Cabrero they still have not impressed fans, although their level of play is improving with every passing week.
Santa Fe is rolling on all cylinders. They are one of the hottest teams in the league right now having won four straight and are unbeaten in their last six. Germán González's men continued that trend defeating La Equidad 3-0 at El Campín. Omar Perez, Giovanni Arrechea, and Mario Gomez all scored for Los Cardenales who find themselves in that peloton that is now catching up to fast-starting Huila.
Last Minute Heroics
Junior had a chance to jump into the top five and snap a nine-match winless streak on the road; but a botched penalty kick by Teófilo Gutierrez and an injury time equalizer by José Nájera helped Real Cartagena salvage a point at home in the Coastal derby. Junior had the lead twice in this match with goals by Norvey Orozco and Giovanny Hernández. Rafael Márquez equalized in the first half for Cartagena on a wide open header on the back post, beating Adrián Berbia.
