2009-2010 UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE – GROUP STAGE

Everyone was so engulfed in all the drama going on in the World Cup qualifiers that without even knowing it the start of the 2009-2010 UEFA Champions League surprisingly crept up on us. It’s only match day one of the group stage and there’s a lot to cover already. Cristiano Ronaldo made his Champions League debut with Real Madrid by scoring two goals. Chelsea got three big points at home. Juventus suffered a disappointing draw against French champion Girondins Bordeux while Bayern Munich had no problems on the road against Macabbi Haifa. AC Milan and Pipo Inzaghi once again proved that Rossoneri should never be left out when it comes to Champions League candidates. Atletico Madrid’s early season woes continue. German champs Wolfsburg were victorious at home, showing that they could be the dark horse in this season’s Champions League.

On Wednesday, Liverpool and Lyon squeezed out 1-0 wins at home against Debreceni and Fiorentina respectively. Inter & Barca drew 0-0 in Zlatan Ibrahimovic's return to the San Siro while Dynamo Kiev moved to the top of the group. Stuttgart drew at home against Scottish champs Rangers as Sevila dominated Romanian side Unirea. Olympiacos secured 3 points against Dutch champs AZ and Arsenal showed heart in coming back from 2 goals down to beat Standard Liege 3-2 on the road.
