Colombian football is in deep sorrow as two players from that country's domestic league died early Sunday morning. According to La Nación, Atlético Huila's leading scorer Herman Córdoba as well as teammate Mario Beltrán died incinerated. Teammate Juan Cámilo Restrepo and two other passengers were in grave condition early Sunday morning after the vehicle in which they were traveling collided with a bus and burst into flames. Restrepo and the other two female passengers involved in the accident are currently the Hospital Universitario de Neiva. The bodies of some of the survivors are irrecognizable and club officials are doing what they can in order to gather team members in order to discard the possibility of any additional players involved in the accident.
This all occurred after league-leading Huila won on Saturday against cellar-dwellers Pereira 2-1. The sad part of this all was that Córdoba, the team's leading scorer, scored the equalizer for the Opitas. Córdoba, 19, was also the third leading scorer in the Colombian league with seven goals; one goal behind Colombian internationals Jackson Martínez and Teófilo Gutierrez. Córdoba was also one of the promises of Colombian football.
Stay tuned as we will keep you updated on this story.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of everyone involved in this tragic accident.
