Group A was decided on Monday as Angola and Algeria punched their tickets into the next round as they both shared honors in their final group match. This left Mali out despite their impressive win against Malawi 3-1. They would be gone because of the first tiebreaker being head-to-head matchups- that topic became a big discussion point afterwards.

The US' opponents advanced leaving Mali out of the tournament despite having scored only one goal so far this tournament. Mali still showed up and gave it a run with goals by Frederic Kanoute and Seydou Keita that gave their team an honorable exit from the tournament.

Mali were left on the side of the road after they lost to Algeria 1-0 after not being able to duplicate their miraculous 4-4 draw against the host nation.
