Last week was the end of the European club season and history was made. I think you know where I'm going with this week's Mad About Fútbol Team Of The Week. Remember that the winner made headlines and/or played matches during the calendar week of May 25 - May 31. The winner is:
FUTBOL CLUB BARCELONA (ESP)
Was there any doubt about this week's winner? No. Barcelona became the 1st Spanish team to win the Treble. They finished their magical season with a powerful 2-0 win in the UEFA Champions League Final against English champs Manchester United. Goals by Samuel Eto'o & Lionel Messi sealed the win for the Blaugrana. Barcelona becomes the 5th team to win a European continental treble joining Celtic in 1967, Ajax in 1972, PSV Eindhoven in 1988, Manchester United in 1999. Congratulations to the best club side in the world and the winner of the Mad About Fútbol Team Of The Week.
2nd place = Football Club des Girondins de Bordeaux (FRA)
The theme of champions continues as Bordeaux gets second place for winning their 6th French Ligue 1 Championship. Laurent Blanc's side ended Lyon's 7 year run of titles by beating SM Caen 1-0 on the road on the last day of the season holding off Marseille & Lyon. Yoan Gouffran scored the title clinching goal as Bordeaux officially ended Lyon's dynasty.
3rd place = Club Universidad Nacional A.C (MEX)
The team better known as Pumas won their 6th Mexican championship when they stunned favorite Pachuca 3-2 on aggregate in overtime to capture the 2009 Clausura tournament. Pablo Barrera scored in the 108th minute in the 2nd leg to win the trophy for Pumas. The title was the 1st for Pumas since Hugo Sanchez leg them to the '04 Apertura & Clausura titles.
