Bayern Munich can start popping the champagne bottles as they have secured the first of a possible three trophies this month. The Bavarian giants beat Bochum 3-1 at the Allianz Arena and are on the brink of capturing their 22nd Bundesliga championship. Bayern Munich could win the treble if they are victorious in the DFB Pokal and the UEFA Champions League.
Schalke 04, meanwhile, could not keep up with Werder Bremen in Gelsenkirchen and lost 2-0, opening the door for Bayern to win the league title next weekend. Werder Bremen will try to defend its UEFA Champions League playoff spot in the last round, but Bayer Leverkusen is only 2 points behind and could snatch the third place finish next weekend. Borussia Dortmund and Stuttgart will also grind it out to the end as they look to qualify to next year’s Europe League tournament.
As for the relegation battle, Hertha Berlin’s hopes have faded for good as the 1-1 draw against Bayer Leverkusen assured their drop to the Bundesliga 2. It’s the fifth time in club history they have been relegated. The last time they fell from Germany’s top flight was in 1991. Freiburg, Hannover 96, Nurnberg, and Bochum will be in the fight next weekend to avoid the second direct relegation spot as well as the relegation playoff.
