Week 38 saw Real Madrid's dream of winining their 32nd league title go up in smoke. Barcelona dominated for well over 75 minutes despite missing Xavi in the midfield. Who needs Xavi, when you have Yaya Touré. The Ivorian international was fundamental in helping Barca hoist their 20th league title as they beat Valldolid at home 4-0.
After a major scare in the early part of the match, Barcelona settled down and the big man in the middle was fundamental in not just destroying, but creating offense for the Blaugrana.
Barca took the lead on the most ironic of plays. Messi's ball into the box was deflected by Diego Prieto who was all by his lonesome in front of Jacobo. But instead of deflecting it out he tapped it right into his own net. At that point Valladolid had one foot in the coffin and the other one on an oil slick.
Touré would then set up the play that led to Lio Messi's assist to Pedro. Then Touré made a sensation individual play passing a defender and reaching the backline. He placed a millimetric pass to a wide open Lio Messi on the other side of the six and the Argentine netted his 33rd goal of the season. Barcelona were just too much for Valladolid as they return to Liga Adelante next season.
Minutes later, Yaya found Messi and the best player in the world did his magic, scoring his 34th goal of the season. That score put him at the same level as Ronaldo and Hugo Sánchez as the only three players to get to that point in the past 22 years. Messi also became the fourth Argentine, the first since Juan Antonio Pizzi, to be league Pichichi. More importantly, he became the first Argentine since Héctor Yazalde back in 1973-74 to win this distinction.
Since Josep Guardiola arrived Barca have won an whopping seven titles. Lionel Messi is the leading scorer in the world with 85 goals in the past two seasons.
Real Madrid in the meantime played a pallid match against a Málaga side that was going to battle until the bitter end to stay in first division next season. The home side opened the scoring courtesy of a skillful finish by Duda. That would be it for the Anchiovies as Real Madrid would bombard the goal defended by Uruguayan international goalkeeper Gustavo Munúa.
The goalkeeper rejected shot after Real Madrid shot and he was impenetrable. Rafael van der Vaart equalized in the second half with a brilliant individual effort, but it would not be enough as they would leave two points at La Rosaleda and help keep Málaga in the top flight.
The bottom three teams were in very precarious positions and were not able to end up with a positive result. That means that Tenerife and Xerez will follow Valladolid in the drop zone.
