Two Escobars screening next week

Posted by Juan Arango 6.06.2010

Unfortunately when you mention Colombia, there are certain negative connotations that go along with it.  We all know what it they are and it has followed them in infamous ways abroad.

The story centers around how Colombians coexist with the reality of the violence between that country's drug cartels and wild west civility that saw the South American nation on the edge of virtually imploding.  The thoughts and dreams of the general population were placed on the national team, who in 1994 were considered by many to be a legitimate contender to win the World Cup.  Those dreams shattered as they were knocked out in the group stage.  Then the tragic murder of defender Andrés Escobar rocked the foundation of the team and Colombian society to the core.

Once again sport becomes the mirror of a society as Jeff and Michael Zimbalist take you on a trip that will amaze and give you a greater perspective on the life and times on Colombian football and its parallel existence alongside the world of the cartels.  From its early beginnings as phenomena to the eventual crossing of paths, known as "narco-futbol" in the late 70's and early 80's, Zimbalist will take you through the rise and fall of these two as seen by

The documentary will be screened at the University of Miami's Cosford Cinema, 1111 Memorial Drive in Coral Gables.  The event is free to the public, but there is limited seating.   There will also be a Q&A session with both directors after the screening of the movie.
