World Cup Preview: Argentina vs. South Korea

Posted by Juan Arango 6.17.2010

It seems like memory lane for Diego Maradona as he will face a past nemesis from his Albiceleste playing days.  After facing Nigeria, his troops will now take on a tough South Korea side that is coming off a big 2-0 win against Greece last Saturday.

Diego faced South Korea in the group stages of the World Cup back in 1986, a match that the South Americans won 3-1 en route to their second title.  He will also face none other than the same player that violently challenged him in that World Cup... Jung-Moo Huh.

Huh came out on Wednesday and told the press that Argentina should "come out and play" and not do "Tae Kwon Do" come Thursday.  Ironically it was the same line that Maradona used when referring to Huh after their encounter in 1986.

For both teams it's the possibility of being the first team to qualify to the next round with a win by either side.

Tactically speaking...
Argentina come into this match a little more relaxed compared to their first match against Nigeria. There will only be one change in the starting XI for Maradona's side.  Juan Sebastián Verón will be saved for the Greece match after suffering a calf injury and Maxi Rodríguez will be starting for Argentina.  Also expect either Mario Bolatti or Javier Pastore to be coming off the bench in the event that Maxi or Ángel Di María do not perform as they should.

Another move that was mightily questioned by the Argentine media was that of Jonás Gutiérrez at right back.  Although he played a workman like role against Nigeria, his offensive projection on the right hand side was extremely limited.

Argentina could have their way physically as South Korea will not have the height and strength that Nigeria offer up.  But the big question is whether Argentina's suspect backline capable of keeping up with the speedy Korean midfield and forwards.
South Korea in the meantime look to be defensive and try to clsoe down the middle and prevent Lionel Messi from getting clean touches.  "Lionel Messi is a great player and we have prepared well in order to deal with him," Huh said.

Althought Huh has on paper a 4-3-1-2, this formation can quickly become a "Christmas tree" lock down if need be as one of the forwards will drop back and leave one player alone up top.  This lineup seems like it will be intended to look for the perfect opportunity to counter attack and find the spaces to strike Sergio Romero's goal.

What South Korea should have seen from the Nigeria videos is that Argentina is very vulnerable on the counter.  Nigeria did very little to take advantage of that.  South Korea can do lots of damage to the Argentines there as well as finding the open space.

Key players:
Argentina- Ángel Di María.  Obviously Lio Messi is the be all and end all of the national team, but for South Korea not to key in on the Barcelona man, Di María will have to be vital for Diego Maradona.  His ability to be effective on the attack opens the way for Messi in the middle or on the right.  He could become a vital cog in the success of Carlos Tevez on that wing as well.

If Di María becomes a key then one of the forwards will be able to make a difference.  Di María's pace can help him destroy lines and open up what promises to be a tight midfield.

Now if he is constantly chasing and having to come from deep in the defensive zone and more in a recovery mode instead of offensive mode, then there is going to be trouble.

South Korea- Sung-Yong Ki.  The Celtic man will be vital for the transport and distribution of the ball for the Reds.   Even though he is 21 years of age, he will have that responsibility as well as trying to keep the appropriate spacing in the midfield in order to prevent Argentina from establishing themselves in the middle of the pitch.   If he is not effective and doing his job on both ends, it is highly likely that players like Ji-Sung Park, Chi-Young Park, and Ki-Hun Yeom not be a factor in this match.
