Colombia Opening week wrap

Posted by Juan Arango 7.19.2010

"Junior win with a goal by Bacca" has become a common phrase in the Colombian press.  The Colombian forward started the season the same way he ended the last one- with a game-winning goal.

After starting out slow against Pereira, Junior were able to bounce back and earn the three points in a 2-1 in their "home" pitch in Cartagena.  So while Junior began their title defense with the right foot, Medellin faltered as they visited El Campin and Santa Fe dominated them with the bare minimum, winning 2-0.

Central defenders Johnnier Gonzalez and Alejandro Bernal scored both goal for the Expreso Rojo.  But the man of the match was definitely Omar Pérez who ran around the pitch and did what he could with the ball and gave Nestor Otero his first win as coach with Los Cardenales.  Meanwhile for Medellín the criticisms began after "Panzer"  Carvajal took over the team for Leonel Alvarez.

Another team that reached the semifinals that failed to earn points in the opening weekend was none other than La Equidad.  Last tournament's runner-up lost to

América drew in their debut against Huila on the road 1-1 while Cortuluá "fall further into the relegation abyss as they lost to Boyacá Chicó 1-0 in Tunja.
