The above picture sums up the feelings when two rivals play each other in a rivalry or derby match. This weekend is a big weekend in club football for rivalries & derbies. The Derby d'Italia featuring Inter Milan & Juventus will take place on Saturday. The Mexican Clásico between Chivas & América will go off on Sunday and the Superclásico of all Clásicos: Boca vs. River in Argentina. That said, our Top 5 names the best rivalries/derbies in all of football, well we will narrow it to club football. Check out the Top 5, guarantee there will be some surprises:
#5 = Al-Ahly vs Zamalek - Egypt VS.
The Cairo Derby features the Confederation of African Football's Top 2 Teams Of The Century. Al-Ahly being #1 & El-Zamalek #2. They are the most successful clubs in Egyptian history and African history. The rivals have a combined 11 African Champions League titles and has the distinction of being named "One of the world's most fiercest rivalries" by FIFA.
#4 = Olympiacos vs. Panathinaikos - Greece VS.
You know this is a great rivalry when the name of the their meetings are called "Derby Of The Eternal Enemies" Like many rivalries the clubs represent a supposed class difference with Panathinaikos representing the upper classes of Athens and Olympiacos representing the Athens' working class. The two most successful clubs in Greek football history also compete viciously in other sports. In 2007, a Panathinaikos fan was killed before a Olympiacos-Panathinaikos women's volleyball match. That's a terrible tragedy but it adds to the flavor of this intense rivalry.
#3 - Inter Milan vs. AC Milan - Italy VS.
These teams share a stadium and a city but there is no love between Inter Milan & AC Milan. In the early days, Inter was seen as the team of the bourgeoisie while AC Milan is seen as the club of the working class. The Derby della Madonnina divides Milan, twice a year in the Serie A and any other competitions they wind up playing against each other. Inter was born from AC Milan in 1908 after AC wouldn't allow foreign players on their roster, hence FC Internazionale. Nothing like xenophobia to start a passionate rivalry.
#2 = Real Madrid vs. Barcelona - Spain VS.
The Spanish SuperClásico is the best rivalry in Europe and is full of all kinds of political and social implications. FC Barcelona represents the rebellious Catalan spirit while Real Madrid is seen as the capital of government & conservatism. Catalan vs. Castellan. The great Alfredo Di Stefano is also a major component of this rivalry as both claimed to have signed him but Real ended up with the legendary goalscorer. Story is that Barcelona was forced to give up Di Stefano by order of dictator Francisco Franco. Combine political, social, cultural, and footballing issues and you have the best rivalry in Europe.
#1 = Boca Juniors vs. River Plate - Argentina VS.
Our number 1 rivalry features the most successful clubs in Argentina and two of the most powerful clubs in South America. The 1st derby to be known as El Superclásico paralyzes an entire nation on matchday. River is known as Los Millionarios as were seen as the club of the upper class while Boca known as Los Xenezies were seen as the club of the working class masses. These teams hate each other so much that their fans sing songs insulting & talking about sodomizing each other when Boca & River are NOT playing each other. What puts Boca-River over the top is Coca-Cola. One of Boca's sponsors is Coca-Cola whose colors are the same as River's: red & white. Coke's banners in La Bombonera are black & white so that no River color scheme will be present in the stadium. Now that's pure, unadulterated hate and the essence of a great rivalry.
There they are the Top 5 rivalries/derbies in world football. Here are some honorable mentions that just quite didn't make the list: Nacional vs Peñarol (URU), América vs Guadalajara (MEX), Fenerbahçe vs Galatasaray (TUR), Lazio vs Roma (ITA), Raja Casablanca vs Wydad Casablanca (MOR), Manchester United vs. Arsenal (ENG), Flamengo vs. Fluminense (BRA), Celtic vs. Rangers (SCO), Colo-Colo vs Universidad de Chile (CHI).
