Former Uruguayan World Cup winner Juan Carlos González(El Pais)
Juan Carlos González, one of the last remaining members of that miraculous 1950 World Cup winning side passed away on Monday as reported by local media.
The former Peñarol man was part of the team that played in Brazil and won the final match that gave the Charrúas their second title, even though he did not play in the 2-1 win against the host nation at the Maracanã. He did play in the 2-2 draw against Spain and the 8-0 demolishing of Bolivia in that tournament.
Anibal Paz and Alcides Ghiggia are now the two only living members of that team.
Backup goalkeeper Paz and Ghiggia, who was the star of that Uruguayan team were honored as distinguished citizens by the city of Montevideo. González received the distinction in 2007.
