Possible strike might affect Spanish Clásico

Posted by Juan Arango 3.30.2010

Spanish online publication Sport Youreported Monday night about the possibility of the Spanish Footballers Association (AFE) going on strike in the coming days due to players not being paid their salaries.

According to Madrid daily Marca, there are rumblings going on in various dressing rooms across Spanish football about the possibility of a work stoppage in order to have people gain awareness of the issue.

"This is the worst Spanish football has been in the past 15 years, yet it is the moment in which most money is being generated,"said Rubiales. "We still want to negotiate (with the LFP), but if that fails we will remain firm and do what is needed."

Monday's meeting between 80 team captains and representatives with newly elected AFE president Luis Rubiales caused this decision to be pondered and could take effect on the day when the Spanish Clásico would be played at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Based on reports, only 15% of all clubs are up to date on the payment of salaries to their players. The overall debt accrued by the clubs is approximately 1o million euros in salaries that have not been paid this season.

The only four teams that were absent from the meeting were Racing and Athletic, who played on Monday night in Bilbao. The other two were Barcelona and Real Madrid. In the case of the last two, both Carles Puyol and Iker Casillas showed their support for whatever decision was made by the AFE.

Is is a smokescreen to grab attention? Is it an impending reality?

One thing for sure, this should not be promoted because of first division players not receiving their salaries; it should be strictly about the players from small teams in the lower divisions being able to get the money they need in order to put food on the table.
