When Jose Maria Aguilar left the club earlier this year, everyone believed it was the end of the nightmare. During his time as president River managed to breach every negative record; finishing last in the league, the longest losing streak, the longest amount of games without scoring and being disqualified year after year in the early stages of international tournaments against small teams. He is also responsible for selling some of the clubs most promising players like : Lucho Gonzalez, Javier Mascherano, German Lux, Javier Saviola, Pablo Aimar, Juan Pablo Carrizo, Fernando Belluschi, Fernando Cavenaghi and Radamel Falcao Garcia and Gonzalo Higuain to name a few. So where did that money go? How is it that with so much money coming in from transfers the club has a $300 Million pesos debt (U$ 79 Million)? What is just curious is that River has not signed any big names in the past few years.
When Daniel Passarella took over the club, he promised to put River back in the place where it belongs. Passarella has said that next semester River will invest almost U$40 million in transfers, to bring back the glory into the club. How does he plan to achieve this? And names does he have in mind?
River will create an investment fun, in which associates of the club may donate up to U$1000. This will bring around U$ 32 Million; something similar was done by Boca Juniors during the Macri era. Added to this, the name of the stadium will be sponsored. This is something very popular in Europe, teams like Arsenal and Bayern Munich already have done so (Emirates Stadium ; Alianz Arena), in the United States you have the Fedex Arena or the Home Depot Center. The name will not change, instead something will be added, for example “El Monumntal Coca-Cola”. River has already started negotiations with one of the biggest telecommunication companies around the world, Telefonica. This would bring a whooping U$40 Million for a period of 10 years.
If there is someone who can bring stars into the club is Daniel Passarella, he is responsible for promoting a lot of the players who currently play in Europe. In this list we have players like : Walter Samuel, Hernan Crespo, Javier Saviola, Pablo Aimar, Andres D’Alessandro, Juan Pablo Carrizo, Esteban Cambiasso, Diego Lugano and it was also mentioned that Ronaldinho could come into the squad (his contract expires in June and he has expressed the feeling of playing in the Argentine league).
River is going to build a super squad to avoid any chances of relagation, but the inmediate goals will be to win the league and qualify to the next Copa Libertadores. The nightmare is over, and the skies look clear for a team that is slowly moving out of the ditch.
