Product review: Nike Mercurial Vapor VI FG

Posted by Juan Arango 5.29.2010

The Nike Mercurial Vapors are establishing a niche within the market as they have become one of the elite boots in the football retail industry.   When these boots come out of the box they are a site to truly behold.  The violet and orange combination is a striking color scheme, but it still does have a subtle quality to it.

This year's edition also has a World Cup edition that is quite captivating.  Its metallic gray/ orange color offer a great deal of aesthetics along with the performance that the Mercurial Vapors have accustomed us to.

These Nike boots have been at the vanguard of technology since they first came out a few years back.   Compared to the Vapor IV FG, the Vapor VI do not disappoint at all in their performance.

In my product review of cleats, I give you my experience more than anything else.  Every foot is different.  Every player wants something different out of their shoe, that is why comfort is a subjective matter- especially when selecting a boot.

Just because I might feel comfortable of not, doesn't mean that you will have the same experience as well.

The Teijin microfiber leather still offers that comfort and fit that is vital for players who depend on feel.  The lace cover offers even more direct contact with the ball, something that is a must for the modern footballer because of the speed of the game.

Contact without balance is insignificant, that is why traction comes into play with this boot. The boots revolutionary adaptive traction technology allows for the player to be able to move better and cut faster.  Change of direction is not longer and issue with this boot and I can tell you it was easier to move laterally.

The key to the success of the boot is the carbon composite that allows the show to be much lighter compared to older models.  This is part of the reason why there is so much traction in the boot.  What's most important is that these boots do take a licking and keep on ticking with its chassis.

One big difference maker for the Vapor VI compared to the Vapor V and its predecessors is the implementation of Vapor traction on to the front of the soccer shoes.  This is in an effort to offer a possibility for the player to be able to accelerate by generating enough force by using similar technology that is used in track shoes.

The front cleats give that extra traction, making the first steps so key in the generation of speed in the long run.

The verdict

For my fickle feet it was a wonderful experience, until I took them off and started to walk barefoot.  It is not a knock on the shoe, it's just my feet.   My arch was absolutely throbbing in pain.  The EVA sockliner which contours the foot inside the boot was not enough in my case to relieve the strain on the arch and outside of my foot.

That is why I recommend those of you with high arches interested in this boot to maybe even get a boot that is a half size larger in order to help your foot mold better.

Also to my wide-footed brethren, please get  a half size larger boot.  I say this based on personal experience.  I have a high pain tolerance while playing, to my detriment, so what I saw happen to my feet is that they underwent two weeks of torture with intense blisters.  For those of you who are accustomed to the more old-school type of boot, I highly recommend that you take a couple of days to really break in the boots and acquire a feel for them.  Once you do that, you will fall in love with these boots and not want to go back.

I learned my mistake as well and pass this nugget of knowledge on to you.  It is tough trying to adapt to the boot, but it does enhance the overall playing experience.

Overall, it is the kind of shoe that skill players should use.  It enhances the feel for the ball when making those daring dashes to goal.  Those passes seem crisper as you can guide the ball better whether passing or shooting.  The Nike Mercurial Vapor VI is going to be a real treat to use every time you go onto the pitch.  Just make sure you follow my recommendations to make your experience much more pleasurable.
