In previous World Cups the stars of the show have been either midfielders or star strikers. This 2010 World Cup has been all about the goalkeepers. Scoring is down in the first 14 matches of this World Cup in comparison to the 2006 Germany World Cup. The star strikers and creative midfielders have yet to score jaw-dropping goals or flash their magical creativity. Its been the goalkeepers that have grabbed the headlines at this point in the tournament.

South African keeper Itumeleng Khune made some key saves in preserving Bafana Bafana's 1-1 draw against Mexico.

Vincent Enyeama was the Man of the Match in Nigeria's 1-0 loss to Argentina. Enyeama was the only player in the past of couple of years to deny Lionel Messi multiple goals, it was the Nigerian keeper's play that prevented Argentina from scoring 4 or 5 goals. How about the England-US game, that match was entirely decided by goalkeeping. England's Robert Green infamous "howler" gave the United States its only goal in a 1-1 draw.

In that same game, US goalkeeper Tim Howard made some massive saves that preserved the point for The Stars & Stripes, a performance that earned him Man of the Match honors.

Slovenia's game winner against Algeria came on a goalkeeping mistake by Algerian keeper Faouzi Chaouchi when Slovenia captain Robert Koren's shot bounced of Chaouchi's chest and into the net. Japan's 1st World Cup victory outside of Japan was sealed by a huge save just off the goal line by their shot stopper Eiji Kawashima against Cameroon.

Without the breakout performance of an attacking player, the 2010 World Cup headlines have been dominated by the play of the goalkeepers. For those who like wide open, attacking, high-flying football, goalkeeping headlines are not what one wants to see. So far, its the goalkeepers that are making the biggest noise in this World Cup.
