Real Madrid have emerged from the proverbial "ashes". Pellegrini was being grilled. Kaká was being dissected. Still through all that they are on top of La Liga. They were able to consolidate their month-long tear with a huge come from behind win against Sevilla at home on Saturday.
Madrid are always respected and their history should always especially on their 108th anniversary. What better present to give the Madrid faithful than a dramatic, come-from-behind win against a team that has been a thorn on their side in recent years.
Also add to that the fact they earned a share of the league lead alongside a struggling Barca and La Liga is now a 14-match race to the finish line.
The Santiago Bernabéu felt dead in the water for 59 minutes, but somehow the team continued battling on against Sevilla that they played some of the best 30 minutes of the season late in the second half. They somehow knew that they were up against the most treasonous score in all of football.
They knew that one goal against a Sevilla side was going to change the aspect of the game- and it did. The Nervionenses came out and popped Madrid in the mouth. Diego Capel saved a cross to going to touch and Xabi Alonso "helped" the visitors drilling the back into the back of the net in the 9th minute.
Ivica Dragutinovic's long distance freekick seemed to seal the deal for Sevilla. It surely brought down the spirits of the the Merengues. But Cristiano Ronaldo, who has been on fire the past month and change, pulled Madrid one back and then Guti plastered the ball onto the crossbar and Los Blancos resurrected.
The White Storm came and Sergio Ramos equalized.
Football is sometimes unjust as the merits of some are rewarded at the cost of the efforts of others. One miniscule mistake was all it took for Real Madrid to take the top spot in La Liga. Andrés Palop was brilliant in goal for Sevilla but in the 93rd minute, a Gonzalo Higuaín rebound found a sprawling Rafael van der Vaart and the Dutch international poked it in for the game-winner.
Was it just? Absolutely. Whether you like or despise Madrid there is one thing that you have to keep in mind, they battled. They might have been lost, but they found a way. They might have not seen the game clearly but they used their other senses to get to their destination. They made mistakes, big mistakes, but that did not deter them from their final objective.
That is why you have to say that La Liga is the best league around. That effort at the Santiago Bernabéu has to make all football fans, regardless of where you stand in the spectrum of loyalty, stand up and clap.
This was the team that Real Madrid fans thought that over 300 million quid would bring. I guess fans of football can now say "Game On!"
